Whitney Russell Whitney Russell Harris-Crane was a fictional character on the NBC soap opera Passions. Her birth year is 1982. She was played by Brook Kerr since the series' debut in July 1999 and last aired in September 2007 when Whitney moved to New Orleans.  is the only Hart High athlete left competing as track and field enters the Southern Section finals today at Cerritos College Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college founded in 1955 located in Norwalk, California. Many of her teammates run with Russell as she trains for her 3,200-meter race. They feel their seasons aren't over as long as she goes on.

``She's a fun person to hang out with, so everyone has a good time running with her,'' teammate Katie Gallette said. ``And we want to support her as she continues racing.''

This is one step further than Russell, a junior, made it last season. Her sophomore year ended in the Southern Section prelims.

That she advanced to this round isn't a surprise, although she expected to compete in her best event, the 1,600.

She was disappointed to finish 10th in the race in the prelims even though she placed second in her heat. Nine qualified for the final.

Disappointed, Russell regained her composure com·po·sure

and ran the fifth-best 3,200 time among Division I girls at 11:12.93, setting the school record in the process.

And, as the first alternate, Russell still would have the opportunity to run the 1,600 if anyone scratches. If not, she'll do what she can in the longer race.

``I would have to run another personal record, I'm sure,'' Russell said. ``But I'm just going to think positive and see what happens.''

Russell began running in seventh grade after having played soccer. Her sister, Brook, now in the seventh grade, started at the same time.

They weren't pushed into it; neither parent had ever run track. However, both were naturals. Brook is one of the best middle-school distance runners in the nation.

Whitney has won three consecutive Foothill League titles in both the 1,600 and 3,200. She is expected to repeat again next year, then she will be followed by Brook. That could mean eight consecutive seasons of Russells owning the league distance titles.

``We never would have guessed they would enjoy it so much,'' said Rick Russell, the girls' father. ``But it's a wonderful opportunity. You can tell the confidence of girls who run track, the way they walk and carry themselves. Both our girls have that.''

Although Whitney started running just before high school, she already was competing at a top level when she entered Hart.

``We could tell she was destined des·tine

for great things, and now she's starting to achieve them,'' coach Chris Irons said. ``She's starting to become more savvy on how to run a race.''

alive and advance to the Master's meet, her teammates will be running with her - at least in their minds.

``They train with me to keep me upbeat,'' Russell said. ``It's much better to run with someone than to run all by yourself.''
