Laird's portrait of her mother-in-law, Helen Connor Laird, interweaves the personal history with that of Wisconsin, where Helen C. Laird lived for almost all of her 93 years. Helen C. Laird was the daughter of William Duncan William Duncan may refer to:
  • William Duncan (missionary) (1832–1918), an English-born Anglican missionary.
  • William Addison Duncan (1836–1884), a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.
 Connor, a major figure in Wisconsin's lumber lumber, term for timber that has been cut into boards for use as a building material. The major steps in producing lumber involve logging (the felling and preparation of timber for shipment to sawmills), sawing the logs into boards, grading the boards according to  industry and politics at the turn of the 19th century, and the mother of Melvin Laird, Jr., US Secretary of Defense under Nixon.
