``It's loud, but I don't think this is what it was really like back then,'' said Jeff, covering his ears, his face scrunched in a grimace grimace Neurology A humorless facial 'mask' typically seen in Pts with catatonia. The re-enactment was just one of dozens of events held for the estimated 8,000 Scouts and their Scout leaders from throughout the Western Los Angeles County Council at the Boy Scouts of America Noun 1. Boy Scouts of America - a corporation that operates through a national council that charters local councils all over the United States; the purpose is character building and citizenship training  jamboree.

The jamboree, the area's first since 1977, began Friday night with a campout attended by more than 3,000 troop members from the region, which spans from the Antelope Valley to Marina del Rey, and from Agoura Hills to Burbank.

Hundreds of tents were scattered across Woodley Park, the headquarters for the weekend bivouac. Many of the troops sectioned off their group of tents with rope and erected elaborate entryways with wooden poles, from which the American flag waved in the wind along with the troop colors.

Troop leaders said the jamboree is an opportunity to earn merit badges. But it is also a chance to have fun.

``They can just walk around and enjoy each other's company, or just goof off,'' said Sandra Graves, assistant troop master for Troop 415.

Plenty of events were planned to keep the boys busy.

Among the activities offered: a nature hike with the Audubon Society, a BMX BMX

Most of the events were open to the public.

The troops were to spend Saturday night in the campsites and try to fit in a few more activities this morning before they leave.

The local council decided to organize the jamboree to give troops a taste of what they'd find at the national Boy Scouts of America jamboree in Virginia.

``Imagine the experiences they can have here,'' said Bryan Eget, vice chairman of the council. ``They can shoot a BB gun, throw a tomahawk tomahawk [from an Algonquian dialect of Virginia], hatchet generally used by Native North Americans as a hand weapon and as a missile. The earliest tomahawks were made of stone, with one edge or two edges sharpened (sometimes the stone was globe shaped). , go fishing, canoeing and top it all off with a real buffalo burger.''

Back at the Civil War, three boys from Troop 911 from Northridge stood behind the ropes that marked the field on which the Confederate and Union soldiers were to fight.

The boys said they will always remember the obstacle course, the campout and spending time with their friends.

``Nothing is ever going to be as great as this,'' said A.J. Trenk, 9.
