A MORE MEANINGFUL VICTORY NORTHRIDGE WIN EARNS TEAM DIVISION III TOURNAMENT BERTH NORTHRIDGE 12, PALMDALE 9.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Northridge Little League didn't win so decisively this time but the victory meant more.

The 11- and 12-year-olds knocked off Palmdale 12-9 for the Section 2 baseball championship Wednesday at Northridge. The victory qualifies Northridge (8-1) for the eight-team Division III

Northridge had defeated four consecutive opponents by a combined score of 44-6. But the boys almost blew an eight-run lead Wednesday when Palmdale scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within two.

``We were thinking Palmdale might come back, so it was a really good feeling to get in there and just throw strikes,'' Fry said. ``They're a good team, and we hadn't been in a tight situation so we really didn't know what that felt like.''

Josh Efron, Joshua Reece and Mike Sherwin added home runs for Northridge. Efron, who has four home runs in the postseason, was 2 for 5 with five RBI. Reece's shot traveled about 300 feet, and Sherwin's homer was his fifth of the postseason. Sherwin (3-0) was the winning pitcher.

``We played good, but we made too many errors,'' said Efron, whose team committed four. ``But I thought Casey did an awesome job today.''

Palmdale (9-3) hit four home runs, including back-to-back shots by Trevor Bloom and Ryne Smith in the fourth. Smith's home run was his eighth of the postseason and 13th overall.
