DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS: We're a mobile dental hygiene service. We provide care to geriatrics geriatrics (jĕrēă`trĭks), the branch of medicine concerned with conditions and diseases of the aged. Many disabilities in old age are caused by or related to the deterioration of the circulatory system (see arteriosclerosis), e.g. , the disabled and home- and facility-bound patients.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS? Yes

WHY DID YOU START THIS BUSINESS? Being in the dental field for more than 13 years, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to provide care independently to patients.

, I was presented the opportunity to have my own independent practice. I took the necessary classes and I graduated in the very first class of Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice (RDHAP)

HOW LONG WAS IT FROM CONCEPT TO OPENING? Roughly one year.

WHAT DID YOU DO DURING THAT TIME? I bought equipment and supplies and developed and organized strategies to market the practice.

WHAT WERE YOUR STARTUP COSTS AND HOW DID YOU FINANCE THE BUSINESS? Less than $100,000, which is less than a small dental office, but more than I expected. I financed it myself.

WHO DID YOU RELY ON FOR ADVICE? My supportive husband and myself.

WHAT HADN'T YOU CONSIDERED BEFORE OPENING? Resistance from certain people who, ironically i·ron·ic   also i·ron·i·cal

WHAT IS YOUR EXPECTED REVENUE THIS YEAR? I have no projection. We're continually marketing.

WHAT GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE COMPANY? To take the practice to the point that both the dental professionals and the patients realize the true value of this dental hygiene service and get their support for the independent dental hygiene practice. There are a large number of people in our community who are in need of this service.
