Summary

2004 saw the Japanese soft drink industry rebound from the previous year's slump in sales. The unusually warm and long summer, continued development of functional and fortified drinks, and launch of hit products, helped to push volume sales despite relatively mature conditions. Value sales also grew on the back of strong volume growth although fierce competition amongst soft drink manufacturers and retailers, coupled with the nationwide implementation of a tax-inclusive pricing system, caused unit prices to continue on their downward spiral.
