The first thing that becomes evident is Steptoe's thematic range and his poetic style, which reaches from the Black Arts Movement The Black Arts Movement or BAM is the artistic branch of the Black Power movement. It was started in Harlem by writer and activist Amiri Baraka (born Everett LeRoy Jones).  to the Neo-School of modernist poets These are some of the major poets of the modernist movement:
  • W. H. Auden
  • Elizabeth Bishop
  • Hart Crane
  • E. E. Cummings
  • H.D.
  • Emily Dickinson

who will shape literature in the 21st century. This book is a commentary of Steptoe's struggle with identity in a social atmosphere that he proclaims as exclusionary. And just, "like Napoleon took the crown of France / like Hannibal took the Alps / like Fidel took Cuba," Steptoe claims his readers' hearts with a regal earnestness.

His use of black and Native American culture for landscapes ring of authenticity. Steptoe is also adept at employing regional dialect and vernacular when he engages in persona poems, such as "A Great Grandad Speaks" and "Some Kinda Railroad Station."

A Long Movie of Shadows presents myriad images through the lens of a poet who exposes his childhood experiences, the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  and the struggle of people of color Noun 1. people of color - a race with skin pigmentation different from the white race (especially Blacks)

race - people who are believed to belong to the same genetic stock; "some biologists doubt that there are important
worldwide. Not only is this book filled with verse that speaks forcefully and lyrically in the voice of ancestors from various periods of Steptoe's life, but there are also critical essays from scholars who attest to and place his body of work in a critical format, which truly deserves praise.
