technology be used creatively to benefit knowledge exchange? The association community in Europe has responded to this challenge with the creation of a book online--a project that gives a whole new meaning to work in progress.

Granted university status in 1992, Robert Gordon University currently has approximately 12,790 students<ref name="HESA" /> at its two campuses at Garthdee , Aberdeen, United Kingdom, organized an inter national five-day conference that brought together association professionals, academics, and consultants to discuss factors that influence the effectiveness of associations.

Ernst & Young representatives and Greenwood came up with the idea of developing a so-called live manuscript manuscript, a handwritten work as distinguished from printing. The oldest manuscripts, those found in Egyptian tombs, were written on papyrus; the earliest dates from c.3500 B.C. . They placed selected presentations online and are now encouraging all conference speakers and participants to comment. This gives everyone involved in the conference--as well as other visitors to the Web site, which is open to all--the opportunity to exchange ideas about the effectiveness of associations.

The presentations and comments will be edited into a book for publication at the end of 2001. In the mean time, Ernst & Young and Greenwood are using the Internet to obtain input for the preparation of next year's conference, May 6-9, 2002, in Brussels.
