A Lesson in Driving

The rich men with the big bucks and shiny, expensive cars are almost always being chauffeured around. They don?t realise that they are missing out on something ? the real joy of owning a car is to drive it. Well, of course, if you don?t drive properly, then even a thing as pleasurable as driving can seem as an arduous task. To drive a car smoothly, here are a few tips that will come in handy. (These are based on a right-hand drive vehicle, so you can modify the tips as required if you use a left-hand drive).

First, you should find out about the feeding mechanism that is required for steering. What that means in essence is that you should avoid crossing over your arms. Basically, neither of your hands should be at a level much lower than 3 o?clock or 9 o?clock, if you visualise the steering wheel as a wall clock. This gives you much better control when it comes to the cars handling, and even if you are a driver of mediocre capabilities, you can circumvent tough spots easily using this mechanism.

Lane driving is extremely important and you should always stick to your lane whilst driving. If you are shifting lanes (for a necessary reason hopefully, otherwise avoid it), use the indicator (blinker) at all times ? each and every time. For instance, if you are turning to the left, and you need to move into the left hand side lane first, indicate left, switch to the left lane and after that take the left turn. Following lane driving essentials can save people from accidents.

The gears are meant to run the car, and not the other way around. It is a common tendency to accelerate unnecessarily in order to shift to a higher gear. Often when you shift to a higher gear just for the fun of it, you end up overheating the engine. Also, people tend to race through the gears to get to a higher gear ? it is best not to. You should preferably maintain the car in a low gear and at higher revs; that lets the car come to a halt much quicker.

Have you ever experienced a situation in which while going up an incline you are suddenly faced with a situation where the car which is in front of you has come to a sudden stop and so has the one right behind you ? you?d have to stop too, finding yourself in a pickle. Well, you would come out of this situation looking good if you can follow these simple steps. The first thing to do is to pull up the handbrake so that the car doesn?t start rolling back. Then, shift to the first gear and let the clutch out slowly, while accelerating in a normal fashion. At the same time, keep your left hand on the handbrake (for a left-hand drive, your right) and release the handbrake as you accelerate and release the clutch ? this will guarantee your car moves forward, and not even an inch back. Not that difficult a procedure, as you can see.

A smooth drive entails a relaxed shifting of gears ? you should not feel a jerk as you switch from one gear to the next. To achieve this, always let out the clutch slowly while shifting gears. Also, try not to accelerate and break too much.

These were only a few tips on driving which can, hopefully, help you maximize your car?s performance. Now you can hit the roads with confidence.
