A LOVER OF MUSIC AND LIFE FRIENDS RECALL J. MARGARET 'PEGGY' BEGTRUP'S EASY SMILE.Byline: Holly Andres Staff Writer WEST HILLS - With her easy smile and upbeat personality, J. Margaret ``Peggy'' Begtrup was a sunny presence in the lives of her family and her friends in the Woodland Hills Women's and West Valley Garden clubs. Begtrup, who had lived in West Hills since 1971, died Nov. 1 from complications of strokes. She was 87. ``She was always very sweet and kind. She was always promoting and trying to get new members for the Woodland Hills Women's Club Women’s clubs first arose in the United States during the post-civil war period. As a result of increased leisure time due to modern household advances, middle class women had more time to engage in intellectual pursuits. ,'' said friend and fellow club member Sharon Blake. ``Peggy always loved to be on a committee. She enjoyed flowers, particularly bright red roses, in her West Hills garden and was a member of the West Valley Garden Club since 1990. ``My mother loved clothes, especially in bright colors, and fashion. She always looked so cute,'' said daughter Marilyn Seaton. ``She wanted to sew all the time. When we were young she made all our clothes. She inspired me to get a degree in home economics.'' Begtrup's smile caught the eye of fellow Iowa State University Academics ISU is best known for its degree programs in science, engineering, and agriculture. Her son Robert recalled the many occasions when the family would sing together, accompanied by his mother playing the piano. ``That was the natural joy of her life. She was always the accompanist. She never looked for the limelight. She always made us look good at whatever we did,'' said Robert Begtrup. Even though his mother grew up in what her son called a ``very conservative household'' where there was no drinking or smoking, she had a joie de vivre joie de vi·vre n. Hearty or carefree enjoyment of life. [French : joie, joy + de, of + vivre, to live, living. . ``My mother could get 'high' on popcorn,'' said Robert Begtrup. ``I remember when her sister was visiting us when I was little and they would stay up after 10 p.m. - that was late for them - and make popcorn. I went to see why they were laughing so hard and they were just talking and giggling about their childhood memories while they were eating popcorn.'' Begtrup is survived by her husband, ``Oley'' Begtrup; a son, Robert Begtrup; daughters, Marilyn Seaton and Sylvia Begtrup; five grandchildren; and a sister, Vera Birchard.
