A LOT OF ACHIEVEMENT AREA ATHLETES HAVE SUCCESSFUL YEARS IN MANY SPORTS.Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer At least one area representative has made an impact in just about every major high school sport this past school year, so overall it's been quite a year for the Foothill League. In football, Hart was going for its fifth consecutive section title - something no large school had ever achieved since the Southern Section was founded in 1914. Also, Canyon freshman Jessi Locke, a six-time youth national champion, rebounded from a broken ankle to finish 27th in the Div. I state finals. Next season, Locke is expected to lead a Canyon team that finished sixth in the state and will be a favorite to contend for the title after losing only senior Brenda Stevens. Yasaman Sakhakorn of Saugus was the area's top girls' tennis player. Sakhakorn went undefeated in Foothill League play and defeated Valencia's Ashley Herrera in the league final. Led by Herrera, Valencia's girls' tennis team advanced to the Div. III quarterfinals. Saugus and Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Melanie De Leon of Saugus emerged as a girls' golfer, helping Saugus to a 31-0 record during the regular season, during which the sophomore lost just one match. The biggest surprise was seventh-seeded Hart's first-round loss to wild-card entry Chaparral of Temecula in the first round. In soccer, none of the Foothill League boys' teams advanced past the first round of the Div. II playoffs, but the girls' teams did much better. Valencia's girls' team surprised many by advancing all the way to the championship game before losing to Westlake. Also in Div. II, Canyon made the semifinals and Saugus advanced to the quarterfinals. Several Foothill League girls committed to four-year universities, including Valencia's Shari Summers (Stanford) and Saugus' Jocelyn Hein (USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. ). The spring sports calendar continues through the next couple of weeks. Valencia, which played Centennial of Corona in the Div. II baseball quarterfinals Friday, has advanced further than any baseball or softball team from the area. Matt Aidem has been batting close to .600 for most of the season, and he has also set a school record for most pitching victories in a season. Hart's Chris Valaika hit nine home runs this season and 18 for his career to tie the school's all-time career record. In softball, Valencia was seeded No. 2 in the Div. I playoffs but was upset 2-1 at Lakewood in the second round. Ashley Herrera and Jaisa Creps both committed to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX , and three others - Tori Rocco (Arkansas State), Natalie Mueggler (UC Davis) and Krystan Reed (Northern Iowa) - also will play at four-year universities next season.
