A LOSS HARD TO FORGET; NIGHTMARES OF SAN BERNARDINO.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Many of the key names have moved on. There is no conference championship on the line.

But there are those Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  football players who remember the night of Nov. 15, 1997.

in the last five minutes of the second quarter. They pulled to within a point in the third quarter, but despite holding a potent Indians team scoreless in the second half, they came up short.

Tonight the Marauders travel to San Bernardino again for a Foothill Conference North Division game. Both teams are just 3-4 this time, but the winner remains alive for a bowl bid.

``It was such an important game,'' AVC sophomore defensive lineman Ashor Valibaba said. ``We played for a championship and we made some mistakes that cost us.''

Considering Marauders coach Brent Carder and Indians coach Ron Smedley lost so many veterans off last season's teams, the revenge factor won't be a major advantage for AVC.

But for returning Marauders like sophomore linebacker Gary Hardy, he'll have plenty of incentive when he sees his opponents in blue.

``I would have to say there is,'' Hardy said when asked about AVC wanting to avenge a·venge

its loss. ``It was a tough game to lose (last year).''

Then there is the stigma of a seven-game losing skid to the Indians. Prior to losing twice on its home field this season, the last team to win at San Bernardino was AVC in 1990.

``Our coach told us it always has been a big rivalry,'' Valibaba said. ``They're probably our biggest rival now so it's going to be an intense game.''

The Marauders know there is no margin for error. At 3-4, they'll have to run the table to ensure a berth in the McDonald's Community College on Dec. 5 at Marauder MARAUDER. ``I think it's pretty important for these guys to get into the bowl game,'' Carder said. ``They've really shown their intensity at practice.''

Winning three straight is hardly impossible. Though if the Marauders can survive tonight, they'll host a 5-2 Citrus team the following Saturday before ending the season at last-place Victor Valley.

``If we win tonight and the final two games, a 6-4 record would get us into the bowl,'' Valibaba said. ``But if we lose tonight and even win the next two, a 5-5 record probably wouldn't impress many people.''

Notes: One week after the Marauders were hammered 37-7 by Chaffey, San Bernardino took the Panthers to overtime before falling 41-35. . . . At least the Marauders don't have to worry about containing standout Indians wide receiver Damien Groce, who caught two touchdown passes in last season's game. Groce has moved to Iowa State. . . . Carder is concerned about San Bernardino's big-play potential on offense. ``In the games we've won, our defense has done a good job. But we have allowed some big plays, mostly in losses,'' Carder said. . . . The bye week seemed to come at a good time for AVC after the 30-point loss to Chaffey. ``We worked on our play-action passing game a little. . . . We got a chance to heal, which was good,'' Carder said.
