peaking when it counts . . . just in time for today's Marmonte League finals at Agoura High.

After being beaten soundly by the Agoura boys early in the season, Thousand Oaks now finds itself in a three-way tie for first with Agoura and Newbury Park at 5-1. In the Ventura County championships last Friday, Thousand Oaks - paced by defending league champion Seth Neumuller - won the large schools' division to finish well ahead of Agoura and Newbury Park.

Westlake (6-0) leads the girls' standings with Thousand Oaks and Agoura at 4-2. Thousand Oaks, however, was the league's top finisher in placing second in the county championships, with Westlake and Agoura - ranked eighth and 10th in state Division II - taking third and fourth.

``We were not at our best,'' Thousand Oaks junior Kelley Hess Hess , Walter Rudolf 1881-1973.

said. ``We were training through a lot of the meets. We're starting to prove what we can do. This is sort of the beginning. We expect to improve more in the coming weeks.''

The Royal girls (3-3), the 1998 league runners-up, could also sneak in Verb 1. sneak in - enter surreptitiously; "He sneaked in under cover of darkness"; "In this essay, the author's personal feelings creep in"

for a top-three finish with the return of junior Jaclyn Pedersen.

Pedersen, the defending league champion, has run only race this season after being sidelined for five weeks by a stress fracture stress fracture

. Pedersen was only given clearance to resume running Oct. 25 but trained regularly in the pool and with weights on her upper body.

Agoura's Laura Jakosky and Thousand Oaks' Hess, who finished 1-2 in the county championships, figure to battle for the individual title with Jennifer Turk of Newbury Park, Erin Weesner of Royal, Ashley Patteson of Thousand Oaks and Westlake's Katie London and Kristen Anderson in the mix.

The Agoura boys started the season as the state's top Division II team but has struggled in recent weeks and dropped out of the rankings. The Chargers, who had four different runners in the No. 1 position in the first four meets, have had difficulty with a solid fifth man as Kevin Sullivan Kevin Sullivan is a name shared by several people:

Sullivan appears to be returning to form after running as the Chargers' No. 3 man at the county meet. Agoura also will have the advantage of running on its home course with numerous sharp turns in its bid for its first league title since 1991.

``I think actually it helped our confidence to be ranked,'' said Agoura senior Mike Berns. ``It was like a double-bladed sword. There was a lot of pressure. We were a little shaky and now we're rebuilding.''
