A LOOK AHEAD U.S. SWIMMERS SET TO JUMP IN.

Byline: Karen Crouse Staff Writer

SYDNEY, Australia - Finally, after weeks of waiting, the U.S. swimming team gets its chance to positively glow when competition gets under way at the International Aquatic Centre.

And after years of waiting, Australia's Michellie Jones Michellie Jones (born September 6, 1969 in Fairfield, New South Wales) is a short and long course triathlete from Australia. Michellie Jones currently lives in Carlsbad, California.  could finally enjoy her moment in the sun when the inaugural Olympic triathlon is contested.

The 27th Summer Games This article is about the Epyx video game series. For the international multi-sport event, see Summer Olympic Games.
Summer Games is a sports video game developed by Epyx and released by U.S. Gold based on sports featured in the Summer Olympic Games.
will commence in earnest Saturday with four swimming finals (the women's 400-meter individual medley, the men's 400 freestyle and the men's and women's 400 freestyle relays) and the triathlon leading the way.

Former Pepperdine swimmer Jennifer Gutierrez Jennifer Gutierrez (born April 27, 1967) is a triathlete from the United States. She is the cousin of Nelson Cruz.

Gutierrez competed at the first Olympic triathlon at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She took thirteenth place with a total time of 2:03:38.48.
will be among those trying to prevent Jones, the No. 1-ranked competitor in the world, from directing an Aussie sweep in the triathlon. Hart High graduate Anthony Ervin Anthony Lee Ervin (born May 26, 1981 in Burbank, California) to a white mother and a black father, is an American swimmer who won the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Freestyle at the 2000 Summer Olympics, finishing with the same winning time as Gary Hall Jr. , meantime, will try to help keep the U.S. unbeaten in the sprint freestyle relay in Olympic competition.

The Valencia resident will race in the morning heats of the relay. A blistering 100-meter split would all but assure him a spot on the four-man squad that will go for the gold in the evening.

``Anthony has looked good in training. He certainly has handled the pressure well,'' U.S. Olympic men's coach Mark Schubert Mark Schubert was the head coach for both the University of Southern California men's and women's swim teams. He previously coached at the University of Texas from 1989 to 1992 where he coached NCAA champions such as Lee Ann Fetter and Whitney Hedgepeth [1] .  said. ``The guy can really compete.''

Aussie superstar Ian Thorpe Ian James Thorpe OAM (born 13 October 1982 in Sydney, New South Wales), also known as the Thorpedo or Thorpey, is a former Australian freestyle swimmer.  also will make his Olympic debut Saturday in the 400 freestyle and as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that figures to pose the most serious challenge to the Americans.

Thorpe is the overwhelming favorite in the 400. He holds the world record in the event and is 2 1/2 seconds faster than his nearest competitor. ``When you watch him, there's not one flaw that I can see,'' said Laguna Hills' Chad Carvin Chad Robb Carvin (born April 13, 1974 in Laguna Hills, California) is a freestyle swimmer from the United States, who became the second man since the legendary Mark Spitz in 1972 to win four individual titles at a US Nationals (1997). , one of Thorpe's U.S. challengers.

Only 17, Thorpe already is such a celebrity here he counts Tom Cruise among his mates.

Of course, there is plenty of attention to go around the International Aquatic Centre. The American swimmers have been made to feel this week like NFL NFL

players in the days leading up to the Super Bowl. The spotlight trained on the sport in this country led U.S. sprinter Jenny Thompson to declare, ``Australia is swimming heaven.''

What better place, then, for Thompson, who failed to qualify for an individual event in the 1996 Olympics, to stage a resurrection? Her crusade begins Saturday, in the sprint relay and the heats and semifinals of the 100 butterfly.
