A LOOK AHEAD: CANYON, VALENCIA READY FOR BIG FRIDAY SHOWDOWN.

Byline: Brian The name Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) comes from an Irish backround. It is of Celtic origin and its meaning may be "hill" or "strong, noble, and high"[1].  Dalziel Dalziel, Dalzell or Dalyell is a common Scottish surname. It is pronounced deeyel (IPA /diː'ɛl/), though a pronunciation with /z/ may now also be heard outside Scotland.  Daily News Staff Writer

Two of the top boys' basketball teams in the Foothill League - Canyon and Valencia - should be fighting for the top spot Friday night in a 7:30 tipoff at Canyon.

Heading into the week, both teams were 3-0. Tonight, Canyon (10-8 overall) travels to Burroughs, while Valencia (10-9) goes to Saugus. Both games are at 7 p.m.

``Everybody is looking at Valencia on Friday,'' said Canyon coach David Humphreys David Humphreys may be:
  • David Humphries, English cricketer
  • David Humphreys (cyclist), Australian cyclist
  • David Humphreys (soldier), American soldier
  • David Humphreys (rugby player), Irish rugby player
  • David Humphreys (clearance diver), Royal Navy
  • David A.
. ``But Burroughs is a good team and we have to make sure we're ready for them first.''

Valencia coach Gary Spindt feels the same way.

``I'm not trying to think about Friday too much,'' he said. ``Nothing will happen Friday if we don't take care of business (tonight).''

Humphreys expects Canyon's gym to be filled to capacity (around 1,500) Friday night.

``We're expect it to be rocking,'' he said. ``(Playing at home) is going to matter a lot, especially because we're used to being at home and we practice there. The kids will also be more relaxed in reference to being at home.''

Said Spindt, ``Every time we play them there the crowd is good. I'm assuming if you're going to the game to get there earlier to get a seat.''

Canyon has two players averaging double figures - senior forward Everett Bryson (10.7 ppg) and senior guard Anthony Falasca (10.4). Senior forward Jaycn Ezell (9.3) and senior guard Jason French Jason French (born April 7, 1978 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a slotback playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

French was drafted out of college by Saskatchewan (9th overall) in 2001.

 to watch.

As for Valencia, senior forward Eskias McDaniels is averaging 21.4 points a game. Junior point guard Royce Minor is averaging 13.1 points, while sophomore forward Will Broadous has an 8.3 average.

``They are really athletic and love to run the floor,'' Humphreys said. ``Defensively they are solid and try to pressure you. They're also a good rebounding team.

``The first thing we have to do is get back on defense so they don't get easy layups. Then we have to take care of the ball and box out on the defensive end.''
