Lauren Fleshman of Canyon High has finished second in her last four races, but the junior will be guaranteed a first in the Foot Locker Foot Locker, Inc. Fleshman finished second in the Western Regional in Fresno last Saturday to become the first girl from the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. The top eight finishers in the Western Regional will comprise the West team for the national meet at Oak Trails Golf Course at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex Coordinates:  Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex is a 220 acre (89 ha) athletic complex located in Walt Disney World, Lake Buena Vista, Florida, that consists of 8 venues. .

``I was confident I had the ability to make it,'' said Fleshman, who finished 19th in the 1996 Western Regional. ``I've run well, but I have not had that one race that I have been waiting for all season. I don't feel like I have peaked yet.''

Canyon coach Dave DeLong thought Fleshman had reached her peak after placing second in the state Division I final Nov. 29. In her previous two competitions, Fleshman finished second in the Southern Section Division I preliminaries and finals.

``We're running our best when it really, really counts,'' DeLong said. ``If I told her she would have gotten second (in the Western Regional), I think we would have both laughed. I shake my head because she keeps getting faster each week and it seems like we've been holding this peak forever.''

In the Western Regional, Fleshman timed 17 minutes, 51 seconds to finish second behind winner Mariel Ettinger of La Grande, Ore., (17:40) on the 5000- meter course at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. ``Two seems to be my number, I swear swear v. 1) to declare under oath that one will tell the truth (sometimes "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth"). Failure to tell the truth, and do so knowingly, is the crime of perjury.  . . .,'' Fleshman said. ``That would be funny if that happened (at nationals). I'd have something to write in my diary, that's for sure.''

The typically conservative Fleshman implemented an aggressive race plan in the state meet and followed it with another Saturday in the Western Regional. Fleshman was in the lead pack by the mile mark of both races with no sign of the mysterious stomach cramps that forced her to drop out of two races earlier this season.

In the Western Regional, Fleshman, who clocked 18:18 on the Woodward Park course as a sophomore, posted mile and two-mile splits of 5:25 and 11:25 - five seconds faster than she had run at the state meet.
