High of North Hills, Benmohamed and his family gave a call to Canyon coach Dave DeLong saying they were moving into the area and were planning to transfer him into Canyon.

Then Benmohamed didn't come. He stayed at Monroe and became one of the top distance runners in the City Section. He finished second in the City in the 1,600 meters last year and advanced to the state preliminaries.

DeLong had all but forgotten about Benmohamed when he got another call. This time, he was coming.

Benmohamed said there were a few factors that influenced him to transfer for his senior year. He was tired of waking up early and sitting in traffic for 40 minutes to get to school. He also never felt like he fit in as a person of Middle Eastern descent descent, in anthropology, method of classifying individuals in terms of their various kinship connections. Matrilineal and patrilineal descent refer to the mother's or father's sib (or other group), respectively.  at Monroe, on a mostly Hispanic Hispanic Multiculture A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race Social medicine Any of 17 major Latino subcultures, concentrated in California, Texas, Chicago, Miam, NY, and elsewhere  team. On Canyon, there are a few athletes who share his heritage.

``I'm much more comfortable at Canyon,'' Benmohamed said. ``It's like a big family. We all get along. And it's much less hassle Hassle () is a location in Närke, Sweden, where a Celtic treasure was found in 1936.

Benmohamed also found a kindrid spirit in Adam McDonald. The two have become practice partners, as they both excel in the same events. Expect Benmohamed and McDonald to finish 1-2 in all Foothill League meets.

``It's really fun with Adam because we push each other during practice,'' Benmohamed said. ``We support each other and encourage each other to go harder. In some league meets, we'll have fun and race each other but mostly, as long as we finish 1-2, it doesn't matter the order.''

Benmohamed and McDonald do have a race of sorts going. Each wants to be the first to break the school record of 4:14 in the 1,600 meters. Benmohamed's personal best is 4:16 and McDonald has run 4:18, both last season.

Benmohamed will need the extra competition in practice to push him because he left a sure thing at Monroe. In the City Section, barring injury, he was expected to easily return to the state meet. At Canyon and in the competitive Southern Section, he will need to make significant gains in order to qualify.

--Sprinters cleared: Canyon sprinters Daunte Davis and Paul Ned received the grades needed to regain their academic eligibility just in time for Foothill League competition. Davis and Ned are available for today's league opener against Burbank.
