A LONG DAY, AND A BIG VICTORY MALIBU'S STEWART SURVIVES RAIN, SEVERAL DELAYS IN OJAI EVENT.

had a long day at the 102nd annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament on Friday. First he had to wait hours through a rain delay. Then he played a third round match that lasted more than two hours. Finally, after resting briefly, he played another 90 minutes in the quarterfinals.

In the end, though, it was all worth it.

Stewart, a senior from Malibu High, defeated Santa Barbara's Blake Muller Mul·ler , Hermann Joseph 1890-1967.

6-2, 6-3 at Thacher High to advance to today's semifinal at 8 a.m. If Stewart wins, he'll play in the final at 2 p.m.

The match came after a rain delay that suspended play for nearly six hours. Players were forced to play 10-point tiebreakers in place of third sets to try to get in the third-round and quarterfinal matches before darkness.

``I woke up at 6 a.m. and then drove all the way up here,'' said Stewart, the top seed who last year at Ojai won the boys' 16 and under tournament. ``I got here at 7 and got warmed up, thinking I was going to play. Then it starts raining and eventually I start wanting to just go home because I'm thinking we're not going to play. Then they tell me I have to play and I have to get warmed up again. It was tough.''

Against Muller, who defeated Granada Hills' Nima Roshan in the second round Thursday, Stewart was able to dominate the freshman for the most part. He held serve throughout and consistently punished Muller with forehands and backhands down the right side.

``I think this match was a little bit easier than the last one,'' Stewart said. ``I played pretty well.''

Stewart is undefeated this season, having not lost a match in either tournament or high school play. He said anything less than a victory in the finals at Ojai would be a disappointment.

``I hate to lose,'' Stewart said. ``I haven't lost a match all year and I don't intend to start now.''

Stewart will face Servite High's Patrick Buchanan in the semifinals. Buchanan is the defending champion defending champion n (SPORT) → defensor/a m/f del título

but has not beaten Stewart in eight previous meetings.

Most recently, Stewart defeated Buchanan 6-1, 6-1 at the Easter Bowl tournament in Palm Springs two weeks ago.

Stewart did had a tough time in his third-round match, outlasting Camarillo's Jason Mossembekker 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 10-4.

Stewart had a commanding 4-1 lead in the second set before Mossembekker rediscovered his serve. Mossembekker, who had trouble holding serve throughout the match, managed to hold twice and also broke Stewart's serve when he double-faulted to help tie the set at 4.

``When my serve started working, that was a huge plus,'' Mossembekker said. ``It set up so many easy points for me.''
