It's the newest store for upscale grocer Gelson's Market and it will open Wednesday in Northridge.

The supermarket, at 19500 Plummer St. in the new Plaza di Northridge, is designed like an Italian marketplace, with each interior department resembling a separate store.

, Gelson's president, said the company has been negotiating to put a store in that location - near the Northridge Fashion Square - for about five years.

``We like the area of Northridge that it's in and we like being next to the regional shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. The modern shopping center differs from its antecedents—bazaars and marketplaces—in that the shops are usually amalgamated into ,'' Stiles said. ``We're very particular where we go with our stores so we're always going to be very methodical, slow and conservative.''

The store will cover 36,000 square feet and have about 100 employees.

Wednesday's grand opening will feature a reggae band and food demonstrations; other promotions are planned into December.

Gelson's is a unit of Compton-based Arden Group Inc., which also operates the Mayfair Markets. About 1,600 people work at the Gelson's chain.

Stiles said the chain is considering adding stores in Pasadena and Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. ``Those are very large developments and are going to take a while,'' he said.

Gelson's serves a niche, catering to shoppers who don't mind paying slightly higher prices for extended customer service and higher end products.

``We are basically a small company so because of that we may not be as desirable (a target). Today they seem to be after a share of the market and by acquiring us they are not going to get that big a share,'' Stiles said.
