A LITTLE RAIN WON'T RUIN THEIR PARADE.

Byline: Diane Dietz The Register-Guard

Imagine a chorus of Eugene Celebration The Eugene Celebration is an annual community celebration and civic event held in downtown Eugene, Oregon, United States. What else can the local celebrants do when the cosmic joker sends 100 days of bone-dry summer but comes up with a prediction of rain for the parade - then blue skies for the rest of the weekend?

"Oh, god, how could that be?" said Kim Still, who's first-lady-in-waiting for the slug queens. "This is some kind of weird joke."

Meteorologist Tiffani Brown of the National Weather Service says clouds are likely to have gathered last night and will spill their drops on this morning's parade.

The rain will bring a sheen to the ground but probably not enough for puddles, Brown said. "It's the closest thing we've had to rain for a long time. It's obviously going to be noticeable."

Parade judge Victor Rozek, who will don a black robe, powdered wig and red rubber nose, said Republicans will blame Kitty Piercy "Kitty" Piercy is the current mayor of Eugene, Oregon, sworn in January of 2005.

The press dubbed Piercy's election part of a "shift to the left" for the Eugene City Council.

Sometime-mayoral candidate and celebration jester Izzy Whetstine will travel the parade route in an easy chair this year instead of taking his usual prance through the streets - a concession to his recent hip replacement. Recently coronated Queen Slugretha Latifah Uleafa Gastropodia Jackson said Fanny Brice aside, she'd rather it didn't rain on her parade. But "if it does, I'll just sparkle and glisten."

Wise Queen Inspira, who reigned in 2003, was philosophical. "A prediction is only a prediction," she said with a wave of her royal hand. "Until it actually rains, it's no one's fault. Once it rains, everyone is guilty."

But her consort, Rozek, said it really makes no difference to him. "As long as the bribes are coming, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow," he said.

How long has it been since it rained in Eugene?

The National Weather Service says it's been only about 50 days without measurable rain, a long way from the record. However, except for some brief rain on July 22, Eugene has been dry since June 1 - 100 days.

The last significant rainfall in Eugene this summer was 0.43 inches on June 1. (There was a trace of rain on July 21 and 0.01 inches of rain on July 22.)

No significant rain since June 1 (100 days).

A stray shower is predicted for this morning.
