But who needs them this year when you can watch pig races, boogie to bands you thought broke up years ago, eat everything edible that fits on a stick, induce vertigo vertigo (vûr`tĭgō), sensations of moving in space or of objects moving about a person and the resultant difficulty in maintaining equilibrium.  on carnival rides and come face to face with animatronic woolly wool·ly also wool·y

Yes, the 78th Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. County Fair) is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California, held every September. It is a carnival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. The 2007 L.A.  takes over Fairplex in Pomona for 18 days beginning Thursday with something for everybody.

``It's a party,'' Fairplex spokeswoman Sharon Autry said, ``and we invite a million people.''

One of the new attractions for 2000 is ``Expedition Earth,'' a journey through six regions of the world featuring its indigenous animals. From the Australian grasslands to the Arctic tundra, the exhibit showcases 300 live animals and 24 robotic ones.

``It's partly entertainment; it's partly educational,'' exhibit coordinator Beth Richards said.

Making its debut is the ``African Village Weekend,'' where from Thursday through Sept. 17, visitors can enjoy African-American culture, including food and crafts.

Also new: ``Thunder Alley Thunder Alley was an American television program, a situation comedy which ran for a season and a half (from 9 March 1994 until 4 July 1995) on the ABC Television Network. ,'' featuring hot rods, vintage and historical racing vehicles and motor-sports history and heritage.

enthusiasts can catch free, live thoroughbred races every day of the fair at noon while other animal lovers can visit the livestock, a nod to the fair's agricultural roots.

``Everyone loves the animals,'' Autry said, ``and it's a chance for the little kids to see some animals they've never seen.''

It is a residential suburb N of Salt Lake City with some farming and floral nurseries; machinery and motor vehicles are produced. Bountiful was settled by Mormons in 1847.  bloomers will be changed five times during the course of the event.

``We're going to move from yellows and golds to oranges and reds to whites and then finally to purples, pinks and blues,'' Hynd said. ``It keeps us fresh.''

For shoppers, the fair boasts the largest marketplace west of the Mississippi, with 2,000 retail booths.

``Here you can buy anything from diamonds to swimming pools,'' Autry said. ``The possibilities are endless.''
