A LIFETIME LOVE OF CAMERAS PROFESSOR 'BROUGHT A LOT OF EXPERIENCE' TO PIERCE STUDENTS.

Byline: Holly Andres Staff Writer

John Gallo, a Marine Corps veteran who taught photography at Pierce College, died June 1 at his Canoga Park home. He was 58.

Gallo began working at Pierce as a photography lab technician in 1975, and was a photography professor from 1981 until his retirement in 2004.

``He liked students and he liked to work with them,'' said Charlotte Murphy, a photo instructor at Pierce College who met Gallo in 1979. ``His style was more of traditional photography. He was more of a photojournalist with that sense of realism. I think he brought a lot of experience as a military photographer in Vietnam to his students.''

John Douglas Gallo was born Aug. 22, 1946, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Gallo's family immigrated to the United States in 1961, and he graduated from Culver City High School Culver City High School is the main public high school of the Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD) in Culver City, California. The school colors are primarily silver and blue but also black and white, and the mascot is the centaur.  in 1964.

``I think he took a photography class as a school elective and that sparked his career,'' said his sister, Susan Pickens. ``He always had a camera wherever he went. We were so mad at him when he turned the only bathroom in the house - and there were seven of us - into a darkroom darkroom,

. We laughed about that later.''

Gallo attended West Los Angeles College WLAC is a part of the California Community Colleges system, within the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), and fully accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges[1].  before enlisting in the Marines. He worked as a military photographer during the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  from 1967 to 1970.

``He was proud of the photos he took in Vietnam. He felt it was important to document the war,'' Pickens said. ``He had slides of Vietnamese women and children and the soldiers in his platoon. He had the everyday kinds of shots - not combat or dead bodies.''

Gallo enjoyed the desert, camping, jazz and folk music. He collected books on photography, art, Vietnam and mysteries.

``He was a caring and thoughtful person but somewhat of a loner loner Psychiatry A single young man estranged from society and family, who suffers from psychogenic pain, and tends to live 'on the edge', vacillating between aggression and depression; loners often have unrealistic goals, but are unable to work towards those goals .
