A LIFE HONORED SITE DEDICATED TO CROSSING GUARD.

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - With three cheers to Bill Hooper, about 50 residents and city officials unveiled Hooper Square on Thursday, honoring the beloved crossing guard who was killed there nearly a year ago.

During the ceremony held near a new traffic light at Magnolia Boulevard and Bakman Avenue, Hooper's fiancee, Carol Armstrong, and his brother, Bob, were hoisted on a city high-lift truck about 10 feet high - where Armstrong kissed her right hand, tapped the sign and set roses on top.

``It was my way of christening christening: see baptism.  it,'' said Armstrong, who had hoped to marry Hooper this past summer. ``That sign will guard those children forever.''

Hooper, a U.S. Air Force and Navy veteran, was killed on the southeast corner of the intersection across from Lankershim Elementary School elementary school: see school.  on Nov. 21 as he helped a child cross the street.

A 17-year-old boy was found guilty of misdemeanor manslaughter and sentenced to a term of probation.
