In Germany, the ceremony was followed by the sharing of a barrel of beer. Lancaster's ceremony was followed with cookies and soda provided by the Friends of the Lancaster Library.

The 48,721-square-foot building, about three times the size of the existing library, is expected to be opened this summer.

"It's going to be a wonderful addition to this community," City Manager Jim Gilley said. "It's not just a repository of books. It will be a major, major part of the social fabric of our community."

The library's support group, Friends of the Lancaster Library, is attempting to raise $300,000 for books and other materials.
