You will find in this issue Dr. Ronald Hamdy's "Letter From the Editor," which describes the new direction for the Journal and the motivation underlying this direction. Dr. Hamdy and I share a belief that the Journal and the SMA are well positioned to deliver interdisciplinary continuing medical education and professional development through an array of timely, relevant content not only in the Journal, but in numerous conferences, Internet Internet Publicly accessible computer network connecting many smaller networks from around the world. It grew out of a U.S. Defense Department program called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), established in 1969 with connections between computers at the applications (www.sma.org), and the Annual Scientific Assembly provided by the Association. Also, SMA's present and future direction is designed to provide continuity and connectivity among its diverse educational offerings. It is the commitment of the Southern Medical Association to stay current in addressing medical knowledge and practice evolving through disease management and evidence-based medicine evidence-based medicine Decision-making 'The use of scientific data to confirm that proposed diagnostic or therapeutic procedures are appropriate in light of their high probability of producing the best and most favorable outcome'. As we survey the landscape of graduate medical education and continuing medical education programming, we find increased emphasis on the interdisciplinary application of disease management and evidence-based medicine. The broad-based knowledge and experience that Dr. Hamdy brings to the Journal ensure that this publication will serve as a vital link to members in fulfilling the Association's commitment to continuing medical education and professional development.
