A LA CARTE FOOD WITH A VIEW: SUMMER OCEAN-SIDE DINING.

The weather is right. The sunsets are terrific. The choices are numerous.

Dining in Dining in is a formal military function for members of a company or other unit. The practice is thought to have begun in 16th Century England, in the monasteries and early universities.  the evening as close to the beach or water's edge as possible, where from your table you can actually see a reasonable expanse of ocean or sailboats gliding by in the marina, is always a summer treat.

Here are a few of those ``on the water'' restaurants worth consideration:

Cafe del Rey Del Rey may refer to:
  • Del Rey, California, a census-designated place in Fresno County, California
  • Del Rey, Los Angeles, California, a small district in the west side of Los Angeles
  • Del Rey (band), an indie rock band

Cuisine: Pacific Rim Pacific Rim, term used to describe the nations bordering the Pacific Ocean and the island countries situated in it. In the post–World War II era, the Pacific Rim has become an increasingly important and interconnected economic region. .

Comments: Generally accepted as the most consistent and creative of the marina-area restaurants. Stellar chef Katsuo Nagasawa piques the palate persuasively at this waterside culinary retreat always good for two hours before the masts.

Picks: Try the chef's artistic joining of salmon and tuna, crab cakes with pink grapefruit sauce and pecan-crusted lamb.

Comments: Watch the Pacific's waves crash over the rocks below as you sample the generally reliable fare of this chain restaurant location.

Picks: The recent emphasis on grilled fresh fish is a step up from the safe and familiar prime rib, steak and chicken that still forms the basis of the menu.

Duke's of Malibu

Address: 21150 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.

Cuisine: Hawaiian-American.

Comments: The islands surfer-themed environment lends itself to good times and friendly relaxation. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke"

Picks: Roasted and grilled fresh fish from Hawaiian waters are recommended here along with the huli-huli chicken, clam and fish chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière , and poki rolls.

Geoffrey's

Address: 27400 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.

Cuisine: Californian.

Comments: So who needs Italy's sweeping Amalfi coast when the view from the best tables at Geoffrey's invite a comparison.

Picks: If the seasonally changing menu lists curried prawns, blue crab and corn chowder, and whole Maine lobster or lobster tart, try them.

Gladstone's 4 Fish

Address: 17300 W. Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). .

Cuisine: Seafood.

Comments: Never a small portion here. One of the busiest restaurants in the land, it's the place to take visitors from out of town, especially on a warm summer day. They'll see the beachy best of la-la land.

Picks: Load up on lobster, crab, fresh fish and foot-high chocolate cake a la mode.

Gray Whale

Address: 6800 Westward Beach Road, Malibu.

Phone: (310) 457-5521.

Cuisine: Continental.

Comments: Formerly Monroe's, it's where you're right on the beach, baby. Downstairs bar and covered patio and upstairs dining room sit right next to the sand. Pictures of whales have replaced pictures of Marilyn Monroe.

Picks: Steak Diane is always an impressive, dramatic choice and there's a good veal chop here. Seafoodies like the macadamia macadamia (măk'ədā`mēə), name for the nut of the Macadamia ternifolia, an evergreen tree native to Australia, but cultivated in Hawaii. The nuts, also called Queensland nuts, are eaten roasted or raw.  nut-crusted halibut halibut: see flatfish.

Any of various flatfishes, especially the Atlantic and Pacific halibuts (genus Hippoglossus, family Pleuronectidae), both of which have eyes and colour on the right side.

Cuisine: Seafood.

Comments: You're almost riding the waves at a window seat here. It's a longtime favorite for oceanside dining.

Picks: Stick with simply cooked salmon or seared sear 1

Pier View Cafe

Cuisine: American.

Comments: As the popular rendezvous for tanned beach types, a bottle of pale ale is about the only thing pale around here.
