The Valley's restaurant row offers everything from fast food to fashionable dining emporiums. Here's a guide to some of Ventura Boulevard's longest established major restaurants:

Art's Delicatessen

Date of birth: 1957.

Cuisine: Delicatessen.

Comments: This place runs under the slogan ``Every sandwich is a work of Art.'' This longtime show-biz rendezvous deli, which was nearly decimated by the Northridge Earthquake The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6. , is loved by the purists. And rightly so. There's no cleaner, more efficient deli in town.

Barbata's Steak House steak house or steak·house

A restaurant that specializes in beefsteak dishes.
 

Date of birth: 1949 in Sherman Oaks. Moved to current address in 1955.

Comments: Three generations of Barbatas have put in more than 100 years in the restaurant business.

Barone's

Date of birth: 1945. Originally located where Casa de Cadillac stands today. Moved to current address in 1949.

Comments: Claims to have introduced pizza to the Valley.

Bobby's Coffee Shop

Date of birth: 1947.

Casa Vega

Comments: Longtime hangout of local sports luminaries - especially boxers and their entourages - and show-biz celebs who like familiar L.A.-Mex style south-of-the-border fare and a cool margarita Margarita (märgärē`tä), island, 444 sq mi (1,150 sq km), in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Venezuela. With many smaller islands it constitutes the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta (1990 pop. 263,748).  or two.

DuPar's

Cuisine: American.

Comments: Classic coffee shop with its own bakery. Favored for its meat pies, fruit pies, pancakes and French toast.

(Also with Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. It was also U.S.  locations in Sherman Oaks and Tarzana.)

Comments: Founded by Larry Cano, this was the very first location of the chain that now numbers 99 restaurants. The facility is connected in the rear to the Los Encinos State Historic Park featuring a onetime stagecoach stagecoach, heavy, closed vehicle on wheels, usually drawn by horses, formerly used to transport passengers and goods overland. Throughout the Middle Ages and until about the end of the 18th cent.  stop.

Comments: This is probably the oldest Japanese restaurant on Ventura Boulevard. The original chef-owner, now in his 80s, has retired. But his tempura secrets continue. Traditionally, Japanese tempura chefs have their own special oil and batter mixtures to make the fluffiest and lightest tempura offerings. Sushi and other Japanese specialties are also available here.

Mon Grenier

Date of birth: 1971.

Cuisine: French.

Comments: When Jean's Blue Room closed, the ``tres intime'' Mon Grenier became the oldest French restaurant on the boulevard.

My Brother's Bar-B-Q

Date of birth: 1957.

Address: 21150 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills.

Phone: (818) 348-2020.

Cuisine: American.

Comments: Owned and run by the McGuire family since its inception with Texas-style barbecue.

Sportsmen's Lodge The Sportsmen's Lodge in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles, California is something of a kitsch landmark but remains a popular spot for celebrations, dinners and public events.

Comments: Though technically now divided into two restaurants called the Muddy Moose Moose, river, Canada
Moose, river, c.50 mi (80 km) long, formed in central Ont., Canada, by the Mattagami and Missinaibi rivers. It flows NE to its confluence with the Abitibi River and into SW James Bay near Moosonee.

Caribou (kâr`ĭb), town (1990 pop. 9,415), Aroostook co., NE Maine, on the Aroostook River; inc. 1859.
, this is the original cornerstone of major restaurant activity on Ventura Boulevard. It began as a 57-seat restaurant (45 in the dining room, 12 in the bar) when two brothers named Bross built it, and gained fame after Dave Harlig purchased it in late 1946. Now, with its extensive banquet rooms, it can feed 1,500 customers at one time.
