A LA CARTE : TURNING GREEN, WITH OR WITHOUT ENVY.

The greening of the world is upon us, which, of course, means that St. Patrick's Day is due, which, of course, means that restaurants and bars with Irish names will be bursting with wall-to-wall crowds Wednesday.

However, there are always places other than Ireland's 32, Monahan's, Brennan's, Timmy Nolan's and Dublin's where this day is celebrated in a special way.

Here are a few of those worth consideration:

Barron's Family Restaurant

Address: 4130 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank.

Phone: (818) 846-0043.

Cuisine: Homestyle American.

Food: Specialty of the day is corned beef and cabbage ($8.95). The dish includes boiled potatoes, carrots, turnips, onions and rutabagas in a hearty broth and the meal comes with soup or salad and house-baked bread.

Barron's offers green-themed desserts that include lime meringue pie, lime bavarian pudding and deep-dish green apple pie.

Special coffees by request may be boosted with such nonalcoholic flavorings as Irish cream, Amaretto am·a·ret·to

An Italian liqueur flavored with almond.

Boomerock

Address: 61 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena.

Cuisine: Australian-style hot-rock-cooked meats, poultry and vegetables are specialties.

Food: Corned beef and cabbage ($9.95), lamb stew ($3.50 per cup, $6.95 per bowl), bangers and mash More of a serving suggestion than a recipe, bangers and mash is a British colloquial name for sausage (bangers) served with mashed potatoes. The sausage may be one of a variety of flavoured sausage; such as pork, pork and apple, tomato, beef, Lincolnshire, or Cumberland.  with salad ($8.95) are St. Patrick's Day specials .

Entertainment: None.

Miscellaneous: All customers will receive a free Rocky the Koala koala (kōä`lə), arboreal marsupial, or pouched mammal, Phascolarctos cinereus, native to Australia. Although it is sometimes called koala bear, or Australian bear, and is somewhat bearlike in appearance, it is not related to true  clip.

McCormick & Schmick's - Pasadena

A dish of rice cooked in broth, usually with saffron, and served with grated cheese.

McCormick & Schmick's - Los Angeles

A later buffet (also $1.95) begins at 3 p.m. on the outside patio and in the Moose Room. It includes corned beef and cabbage and Irish stew.

Irish coffees and Heineken green beer are drink specials.

Entertainment: Live music by the Urban Dead rock band begins at 5 p.m. Bagpipe bagpipe, musical instrument whose ancient origin was probably in Mesopotamia from which it was carried east and west by Celtic migrations. It was used in ancient Greece and Rome and has been long known in India.  players entertain from 3 to 7 p.m.

Taix French Restaurant

Cuisine: Country French.

Food: Corned beef and cabbage with all the trimmings (complete lunch $9.95, dinner $11.95). Meal includes sourdough bread, tureen of hot soup, house green salad and sherbet sher·bet

Weber's Place

Cuisine: American.

Food: Look for Brandy's special Reuben-style corned beef sandwich ($5.99) also Brandy's famous corned beef plate ($4.99). Green beer is $2.25.

Entertainment: Bagpiper. Dancing. Live leprechaun leprechaun (lĕp`rəkŏn), Irish fairy represented as a tiny old man. Leprechauns are mischievous and elusive creatures, said to possess buried crocks of gold, the location of which they will reveal if forced. . Miller, Bud and Coors girls.

Miscellaneous: Blarney Stone on the bar for wish-makers. Prizes given out all day long.
