Watching the Oscars has become a national pastime.

Congruent with it is the enjoyment of a reasonably good meal. If you're not invited to one of the Oscar bashes put on by movie-biz entities - some of this year's biggies are the Miramax party at Coco Pazzo in the Mondrian Hotel, the annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Elton John AIDS Foundation is a charity fund that was started by Elton John to help fight HIV, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases. He was inspired by the death of Ryan White & Freddie Mercury who both suffered from AIDS and were close friends of his.  event at Maple Drive, Morton's Vanity Fair party, Columbia/Tri-Star at Eclipse and the Governors Ball at the Music Center - there are a smattering of parties for John and Susie Q. Public.

By the way, Spago will actually be closed on Oscar night this year. Here are a few spots worth consideration:

Arbuckle's

Comments: This is both an Oscar and a birthday celebration, this day being late actor Roscoe ``Fatty'' Arbuckle's 110th birthday. A Roaring '20s show featuring Richard Halpern, Cheryl Chase, the Bamboo Babies and Kelly Foster follows the telecast. Cost: $50 per person.

Comments: This is fund-raiser for Earth Communications Office, a charity that calls itself the Environmental Voice of the Entertainment Industry. It's a black-tie event with Toni Childs performing post-telecast. Tickets: $250 each. Organizers say James Woods, Woody Harrelson, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Donna Mills, Shirley MacLaine and Oliver Stone will be there.

Menu: ObaChine appetizers (potstickers, samosas, Vietnamese eggrolls et al.) and a complete constantly replenished Asian seafood buffet all night.

Pinot Bistro

Menu: Appetizers (chicken, crabcakes and mushrooms in pastry), salad, choice of entree (pasta, salmon or pork), lemon tart dessert.
