A LA CARTE : ON THE WATER: SUMMER BEACH DINING.

Byline: Larry Lipson

It's restful, romantic and rewarding.

We're speaking of a relaxed restaurant dinner at the beach or marina, overlooking shimmering waters, perhaps while enjoying the sunset as it dips below the horizon.

Here are some ``on the water'' restaurants worth consideration:

Cafe del Rey

Address: 4451 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey.

Phone: (310) 823-6395.

Cuisine: Pacific Rim.

Comments: Here's the best place for food and one of the most impressive view dining spots at the marina.

Picks: Try the crab cakes in pink grapefruit sauce or the colorful thin strands of julienned cucumber and gravlax grav·lax

Duke's at Malibu

Address: 21150 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.

Phone: (310) 317-0777.

Cuisine: Hawaiian-American.

Comments: The former Malibu Sea Lion has a surfer theme and a South Pacific island personality. It's a true beach restaurant, and you'll feel you're part of an ongoing beach party here.

Picks: Poki rolls, roasted fresh ono, huli-huli chicken, and the clam and fish chowder chowder, stew of fish or shellfish with potatoes, onions, and pork (usually salt pork), thickened with crumbled hard bread. The name chowder seems to have originated from the French word chaudière  are recommended.

Geoffrey's

Comments: No, you're not on Italy's scenic Amalfi coast, you're right here in SoCal. But it's pretty darn close, especially on a clear, sunny day. Check it out.

Picks: Wild mushrooms in filo FILO - stack  or the lobster tart share starter honors with blue crab and corn chowder. And there may be a fine Mediterranean fish stew to help your fantasy about being in an even more exotic locale.

Gladstone's 4 Fish
