A LA CARTE : GREEN MONDAY BECKONS.

The obvious destination for a St. Patrick's Day celebration is an Irish restaurant or bar.

There are plenty, from Timmy Nolan's in Toluca Lake to the Irish Castle in Van Nuys to the new Gallagher's in Newhall.

Some people may not realize that Jimmy's in Beverly Hills, owned by Jimmy Murphy, is one of the major Irish dining spots on the West Coast. But they'll recognize such Irish names as Gilliland's and Monahan's. And there are signs that are dead giveaways: Muldoon, Brennan, Sullivan, Callahan, Malone, Clancy and McGinty. New on the Sunset Strip is Dublin's.

A few spots turn green just for this occasion, and they are easier to get into on St. Patrick's Day - an especially big factor this year since the holiday is on a Monday, when many restaurants are closed.

Here are a few of the temporarily Irish restaurants that will remain open:

Cafe Cordiale

Address: 14015 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks.

Cuisine: International.

Comments: A place that's cordial sounds right for Irish-style hospitality. And it is.

Picks: How about potato soup or smoked salmon to start? Then try the cocklety pie stuffed with scallops, mushrooms and potatoes with a whitefish whitefish: see salmon.

Entertainment is provided by the Knackers, an Irish rock group; Mallory & McCall, a strolling Irish duo; a surf band called Wipeout; also pipers and drummers.

Picks: There will be food booths in the restaurant's courtyard serving corned beef sandwiches, green-lipped mussels, clam chowder and crabcake sandwiches. Irish coffees, appropriate beers and other goodies.

Comments: The actual celebration starts here on Saturday with corned beef sandwiches, Guinness and Bailey's specials.
