Here are a few of the ones who have made a mark locally, operating independent eating spots worth consideration:

Angeli Caffe

Owner: Evan Kleiman.

Cuisine: Italian.

Comments: Chef-owner Kleiman is a noted cookbook author who pioneered the purveying of Tuscan recipes in L.A. and for a while ran a group of Angeli-named trattorias before confining herself to her original hot spot on Melrose.

Comments: Touted by her publicist as "the grand doyen of Santa Monica," Sands holds court in a charming cottagelike hideaway that is favored by foodies for its consistently capable culinary character.

Comments: Since the days when Cary Grant chopsticked regularly under the Madame's tutelage TUTELAGE. State of guardianship; the condition of one who is subject to the control of a guardian. , Wu has wooed Hollywood's luminaries in her friendly, regal manner.

Comments: Possibly the only waitress who bought and took over the restaurant where she worked in town, Kumpula hosts the sports and literary set at this venerable hangout where a substantial meal and a strong drink for a reasonable price aren't things of the past.
