A LA CARTE\GOING FOR THE GREEN.

There are two scenarios for upcoming St. Patrick's Day celebrants. They can seek out the real Irish restaurant and/or bar, one that is Irish year round.

Or they can visit one of the many places that becomes Irish for this particular day only - kind of like all of us tend to become Irish on St. Paddy's Day.

Because places like Timmy Nolan's, Gilliland's, Tom Bergin's and spots using the name Brennan, Clancy, Muldoon, McGinty, Malone, Mulligan, Monahan, Callahan and Sullivan will be filled to the brim all day Sunday, here are a few of the usually non-Irish restaurants worth consideration for a meal and a tipple:

Cafe Cordiale

Address: 14015 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks.

Cuisine: International.

Comments: Always enthusiastic about celebrating St. Patrick's Day, this neighborhood favorite reopened recently after the building burned down as a

result of the Northridge Earthquake.

Picks: Potato soup ($3.95) or smoked salmon ($6.95) provide a good start. Irish-accented entrees with scones are cocklety pie made with scallops, mushrooms and potatoes and a whitefish veloute ve·lou·té

A white sauce made of chicken, veal, or fish stock thickened with a roux of flour and butter.

 sauce ($15.75), Irish lamb stew ($14.25), corned beef and cabbage ($14.75), baked salmon in cream ($16.95) and baked chicken breast with Irish sausage stuffing ($13.50). Desserts (included with entree price) are Bailey's Irish Cream cheesecake, bread and butter pudding Bread and butter pudding is a traditional dessert popular in British cuisine. It is essentially a baked form of French toast.

It is made by layering slices of buttered bread scattered with raisins in an oven dish into which an egg and milk mixture (sometimes with vanilla or
 and apple crumble with fresh cream.

Comments: This upscale special-occasion restaurant nearly always pleases.

Picks: Imported chef Michel Flamme from the Kildare Country Club in Ireland is preparing Irish meals all week long through Sunday. Dishes include nettle nettle, common name for the Urticaceae, a family of fibrous herbs, small shrubs, and trees found chiefly in the tropics and subtropics. Several genera of nettles are covered with small stinging hairs that on contact emit an irritant (formic acid) which produces a  soup, Dublin coddle, rack of Wicklow lamb glazed with Boyne Valley honey, Irish whiskey mustard with gratinated crabmeat crab·meat

Killaloe (Irish: Cill Dalua meaning Dalua's church) is a town in east County Clare, Republic of Ireland, situated in the midwest of Ireland.

Picks: Green beer, Irish coffees and a happy hour featuring corned beef and cabbage for $1.95 are part of the activities. Irish stew and special green dishes are offered.

Cuisine: American sports bar.

Comments: This is the first St. Patrick's Day since this facility changed its name from McGuire's. Former chef/owner Frank McGuire returns to cook the Irish specialties.

Picks: Buffet spread for $6.95 includes Irish farm salad, corned beef and cabbage, Colcannon potatoes, Irish beef and lamb stews, soda bread, Irish-style chicken and Irish potato rolls.

Taix

Address: 1911 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.

Phone: (213) 484-1265.

Cuisine: Country French.

Comments: 67-year-old Taix doffs its Gallicism and becomes Irish every March 17.

Picks: Nightly through Sunday the menu features corned beef and cabbage and all the trimmings ($7.95 for lunch, $9.95 for dinner) served with fresh sourdough, a tureen of soup, a green salad and sherbet.

Valley Inn

Address: 4557 Sherman Oaks Ave., Sherman Oaks.

Cuisine: American/continental.

Comments: Longtime rendezvous of writers and sports figures, it's always buzzing at party times. Lots of green beer and Irish coffee swigged here.

Picks: The all-you-can-eat corned beef and cabbage dinner (with soup or salad) is offered nightly through Sunday for $15.95.
