. King was one of those rare preachers able to make religious text and stories immediately relevant to the day-today business of ordinary lives. He urged people to be right with "yourself, right with others, and right with God." He preached about "The Drum Major Instinct," whereby everyone wants to be first, so they spend too much on cars and homes, and engage in all kinds of destructive activities. He concluded by saying that he, too, wanted to be first, but he dealt with this by wanting to be a drum major for justice and peace.

Underlying these sermons is a deep sense of justice and the sense that we are all connected to each other. In the 1960s, King said that humanity will either learn to live together as brothers, or we will die together as fools. His words are as relevant now as they were 40 years ago.
