A Jonah's view of a blue whale in Santa Barbara.

He was only 25 and not yet a fully grown blue whale when he washed ashore north of Santa Barbara 4-1/2 years ago. Today, you can get a close-up view of his 72-foot, 3-ton skeleton by visiting the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Freshly painted, he's the first thing you see before entering.

It took six weeks for scientists to remove all his bones, winching them up the 100-foot cliff on Vandenburg Air Force Base where he was beached. It then took three years to clean and reassemble the skeleton before it could be mounted on a steel framework in front of the museum.

To reach the museum from the Santa Barbara Mission, wind 1/2 mile north on Mission Canyon Drive and look for signs. Admission is free; hours are 9 to 5 Mondays through Saturdays, 10 to 5 Sundays. For more details, call (805) 682-4711.
