The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts. Guild, which holds four major shows a year, has selected five animal-welfare organizations to benefit from its art show at La Fonda to be held from Friday until next Sunday. The plight of animal-rescue groups in bleak economic times prompted the guild to take on animal welfare as its annual project, said chairperson Gail Karr. After Hurricane Katrina The guild felt strongly that this was the year to focus on animal-welfare groups. "It's the animals that are really suffering right now," Karr said. "People can't afford them, and they are giving them up, and the shelters are struggling." Guild member Deborah Auclair has been a driving force behind the show. She was able to put together the show and find an appropriate space within days. Auclair said combining an art show with animal awareness was an idea that just came to her, and everything fell into place. The free show will feature booths from 16 artists and additional works by other members, including Mark Durham. Durham, through Mad Studio Inc., produces very popular coloring books of cats and dogs Cats and Dogs A slang term referring to speculative stocks that have short or suspicious histories for sales, earnings, dividends, etc. Notes: In a bull market analysts will often mention that everything is going up, even the cats and dogs. , Karr said. The high-quality show also will include fine art, tapestry handbags, jewelry and pottery -- all handmade. Guild member and photographer Ginger DeLater said the show, with its emphasis on helping animal groups, was a good fit for her. DeLater, who specializes in fine-art pet photography, said she regularly donates a portion of her profits to shelters during special events. "It fits in with my philosophy," she said. "I get to do what I love to do and give something back at the same time." Aside from the show's profits, guild members are also considering other ways of raising money, including a raffle, donating art or making a collective donation. DeLater said people have been positive about the group's effort. "Things are tight, but if you're going to buy a gift, why not buy something that has an added benefit," she said. "At least some of the money will be going to the animals." The animal-welfare groups will have an informational table to help educate people about their work. Examples of humane societies include: The Humane Society of the United States, Peninsula Humane Society, American Humane which was founded in 1877 as a network of & Animal Shelter. The money will be split equally among the five groups. "Every dollar raised is critically needed," Rios said, noting the costs of feeding the shelter's rescued horses has hit $152 a day for hay alone. The economic downturn means more people are abandoning their horses, Rios said. The shelter is caring for 43 horses, the highest number of rescues to date. "Every dollar is important," Rios said. "But it's not just the money; it's the awareness that these kind of events bring. That awareness is important." The show, which will take place in the New Mexico Room, runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
