A HAWK AND A HACKSAW The Arches,.Byline: LEO FORDE A HAWK AND A HACKSAW The Arches, Glasgow, June 22 This ever-expanding group of musicians created a crazed mesh of national styles that anyone would have a hard time labelling. One-man band one-man band n → hombre-orquesta m one-man band n → homme-orchestre m one-man band n → Jeremy Barnes took centre stage with his accordion and percussion while, behind him, a bouzouki bouzouki Long-necked lute used in Greek popular music. Developed from a Turkish instrument early in the 20th century, it has a pear-shaped body and a fretted fingerboard. battled with a trumpet and a tuba with a whispering clarinet. The band promoted their album Dlivrance, which was released in May, and their new-found interest in Balkan traditions with some haunting group vocals. While the sound seemed chaotic at times, there was a clear musical sophistication so·phis·ti·cate v. so·phis·ti·cat·ed, so·phis·ti·cat·ing, so·phis·ti·cates v.tr. 1. To cause to become less natural, especially to make less naive and more worldly. 2. and respect for the cultures they had incorporated. Definitely worth a listen. LEO FORDE |
