1. Of or relating to rhetoric.

2. Characterized by overelaborate or bombastic rhetoric.

3. Used for persuasive effect: a speech punctuated by rhetorical pauses.
 theory written before the fifth century AD and is comprised of detailed descriptive summaries of "all the important authorities and works from Greek and Latin antiquity, including works as yet untranslated into English." It is designed to serve as a reference tool for students and teachers of rhetoric who want "to find out quickly and accurately who says what and where." The summaries are cued by parenthetical citation Within the context of a document composed as per some style guide, a 'parenthetical citation' (or 'parenthetical notation') is a reference to a source that is placed (in parentheses) at the end of a sentence, but prior to the period/fullstop.  to the original texts, and topics and concepts are both cross-indexed and included in the comprehensive index.
