Omar Olivares Omar (Palqu) Olivares (born July 6 1967 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico) is a former right-handed starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1990-1994), Colorado Rockies (1995), Philadelphia Phillies (1995), Detroit Tigers (1996-97), Seattle Mariners  felt he was pitching well, so he didn't panic while losing six consecutive decisions. His patience was finally rewarded on Monday.

Gary DiSarcina's double triggered a four-run second inning and Olivares won for the first time since June 17 as the Angels handed Detroit its seventh straight loss 6-2.

``The streak was tough, because I wasn't pitching that bad,'' said Olivares (6-8), who pitched seven strong innings. ``I was still getting ground balls, so there wasn't a lot I could change. There wasn't a lot I could do.''

Olivares, facing the team that traded him to Seattle just over a year ago, allowed two runs and six hits, striking out six and walking four.

``I know all those guys, so it's a little bit different,'' Olivares said. ``They are all my friends. But when the game starts, you don't look to see who is in the uniform.

``If I do that, Bobby Higginson Robert Leigh Higginson (born August 18, 1970 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a former outfielder in Major League Baseball who played his entire career for the Detroit Tigers. He has a career batting average of .272. He attended Temple University.  will be all over me.''

Actually, it was Luis Gonzalez Luis Gonzalez is a common personal name that can refer to different people:
  • Luis Emilio González (baseball outfielder): a Major League Baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers
 - who didn't play for Detroit when Olivares did - who did all the damage for the Tigers. Gonzalez hit two homers to raise his season total to a career-high 16.

``Maybe down the road, maybe when the season is over, I can look back and enjoy some of this,'' Gonzalez said. ``But right now, it doesn't mean that much to me. I would much rather have won the game. This team is just struggling right now.''

The Angels, who won for only the fourth time in 11 games, moved within 1-1/2 games of first-place Texas in the AL West. The Rangers were off Monday.

Detroit starter Frank Castillo Frank Anthony Castillo born on April 1, 1969 in El Paso, Texas is a major league reliever who currently pitches for the York Revolution (2007-present).

``It's the same old stuff night after night,'' Detroit manager Buddy Bell

said. ``Bad pitching and bad hitting.''

Gonzalez's homer in the first put the Tigers up 1-0, but the Angels rallied in the second on DiSarcina's two-run, bases-loaded double and Orlando Palmeiro's two-run single. The Angels increased their lead to 5-1 in the fourth on an error by third baseman third baseman

Defense played a big part, too. After Paul Bako opened the Detroit fifth with a single, Bell called for a hit-and-run play. But right fielder Garrett Anderson made a nice running catch on Brian Hunter's sinking liner and flipped to first to double off Bako. The play looked especially big when Gonzalez, who went 3 for 4, followed with a single.

``Any time you get a double play, it's a big play,'' Anderson said. ``They don't call it the pitcher's friend for nothing.''

Gonzalez homered again in the seventh to make it 6-2.
