A GOLDEN MORNING; NOMINEES ARE THRILLED, HONORED AND NOT ALL WELL.

Janet McTeer Janet McTeer (born May 8, 1961) is an award-winning British actress from Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

After graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts Janet McTeer began her successful theatrical career with the Royal Exchange Theatre.
said she had been concentrating on kicking a case of the flu when she learned of her nomination for a Golden Globe award.

``My friend from Fine Line called and screamed it in my ear,'' said McTeer, who was nominated for best actress in a comedy or musical for her role in ``Tumbleweeds,'' ``It was the sort of noise that deafens dogs, but I got the gist.''

``I'm delighted, because now a lot of other people will get to see the film,'' she added.

Another Brit, Anthony Minghella, had just arrived in New York New York, state, United States

, where his new film ``The Talented Mr. Ripley'' is scheduled to open this week. He got off the plane and took a ``very good phone call,'' learning that ``Ripley'' had snagged five nominations, including one for Minghella's direction.

``I'm such a tortoise, I only finished this movie 10 days ago,'' said the Oscar-winning director of ``The English Patient.'' ``Just to know there's some support for this is enormously encouraging. I take these nominations very seriously indeed.

``I've gotten increasingly conscious of the expectation level after 'The English Patient.' It's nice to know that I'm not a one-hit wonder. I feel relieved, like I might get another job after this.''

Minghella handed plaudits to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for recognizing ``Ripley'' star Matt Damon's ``unsplashy and modest performance.''

``The screenplay is so dignified by what he's done,'' Minghella said. ``He's got some recognition without turning in a virtuoso bells-and-whistles performance.''

He has garnered much critical acclaim for his portrayals of several real-life figures, such as Steve Biko, Malcolm X, Rubin "Hurricane" , who was also nominated for best actor in a drama for his work in Bernstein's film, ``The Hurricane.''

``This wasn't just one of the best performances of the year; this was one of the best performances ever,'' said Bernstein. ``I've been way overstated o·ver·state

Early in the day Monday, Bernstein spoke to the film's director, Norman Jewison Noun 1. Norman Jewison - Canadian filmmaker (born in 1926)

``This is just like one of those days to savor,'' Bernstein said. ``You walk out, look at the sky and say 'thank you' to whoever needs to be thanked.''

Those who shook the early morning bleariness enough to digest the nomination list were hard pressed to cite any voting trends. That such critically praised movies as ``American Beauty'' and ``The Insider'' would pull in multiple nominees makes sense. But how to account for Frank Darabont's ``The Green Mile'' netting only one nomination, for supporting actor Michael Clarke Duncan and not awards magnet Tom Hanks?

``Oh God, I wish I could comment on that,'' said Helmut Voss, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. ``This has been a very quirky year as far as films are concerned. There really has not been one film that blew everyone away. It was a wide-open field.''

``American Beauty'' writer Alan Ball accepted the invitation of his Hollywood Hills neighbor - and ``Beauty'' producer - Dan Jinks jink

 watched together. And celebrated together.

``I do know that, from a writing standpoint, I'm in very good company,'' said Ball. ``I've been a big fan of John Irving (nominated for ``The Cider House Rules'') since I read 'The World According to Garp' in college.

``I read Charlie Kaufman's script for 'Being John Malkovich,' and I thought it was very good.'' He also praised double nominee Michael Mann, co-writer and director of ``The Insider.'' ``And I'm not going to try to pronounce the name of the guy who wrote 'The Sixth Sense.' (M. Night Shyamalan Manoj Nelliattu Shyamalan (born August 6, 1970), known professionally as M. Night Shyamalan, /'ʃæ.mæ.lɔːn ). I'm huge fans of all their work.''

Monday was a day when nominees around the world sent pithy pith·y

statements of thanks to their agents and publicists. From the uninspired (``I'm very happy and honored to be nominated'' - ``Toy Story 2'' songwriter Randy Newman) to the gracious (``I am completely delighted to be acknowledged for work that was such a pleasure to do'' - ``The Muse'' supporting actress Sharon Stone) to the inside jokers (``I am very flattered. The readers of 'Horse and Hound' will be thrilled'' - best actor in a comedy nominee Hugh Grant, who played a journalist-impersonating bookseller in ``Notting Hill'').

And from ``Cider House'' actor, Michael Caine, who had more in common with Janet McTeer Monday than being a Golden Globe nominee:

``Getting this news certainly brightened my day,'' Caine said in a prepared statement, ``as I lie here in bed with the flu.''
