The canopies, tents, blankets, sleeping bags and pillows that decorated the grass field around Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Community Pool on Saturday offered a colorful indication of the marathon-like competition it played host to.

With the area's best trying to stay on top amid pressure from those trying to reach that level, the 19th Josh Mlakar Royal Invitational was a meet where any rest provided by the temporary shelters was more than welcome.

Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  High boys' team earned at least a day off after winning its sixth consecutive Royal Invitational, defeating second-place Hart 275-1/2-247.

Highlanders have maintained their dominance over City Section competition.

But Granada Hills captured the Royal Invitational - which acts as a preview of the much stronger Southern Section Championships - without U.S. champion Jennifer Parmenter, who was ill, and its coaches. Jeremy Vaa and Natalie Shapiro, both full-time students and swimmers at Cal State Northridge, had prior commitments.

``These girls don't get a lot of competition during the season,'' said Gary Snyder Gary Snyder (born May 8, 1930) is an American poet (originally, often associated with the Beat Generation), essayist, lecturer, and environmental activist. Snyder is a winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. , a Granada Hills teacher who accompanied the team. ``This is something they really looked forward to. They were really anxious to do this.''

. Ervin, who accepted a scholarship from Cal, won the 50 (21.02) and 100 (45.93) freestyles.

``I was actually pretty nervous before (the 200 freestyle),'' Parmenter said. ``I raced against (third-place finisher Scott) Weaver and I knew Kenny would be swimming fast.''

Parmenter finished third in the Southern Section finals last year in the 200 freestyle. Carpenter, who will swim at Brigham Young University Brigham Young University, at Provo, Utah; Latter-Day Saints; coeducational; opened as an academy in 1875 and became a university in 1903. Carpenter was victorious in the 100 butterfly (51.66) on Saturday.

``We always want to win every meet we go to,'' Carpenter said, ``but since it's tradition (for Crescenta Valley) to win here, we wanted to go out with a bang.''

There was only one double-winner in the girls' meet. Ventura's Jana Richardson won the 200 (1:55.43) and 100 (53.41) freestyle.

Ingrid Salazar, from host Royal, was victorious in the 500 freestyle (5:05.19), while teammate Carly Huffman won the 50 freestyle (24.82). But it was not to be for the team, which finished in a tie for third place with Crescenta Valley.

``It's a long meet, but it's an unusual thing,'' said Salazar, who will swim for Boston University Boston University, at Boston, Mass.; coeducational; founded 1839, chartered 1869, first baccalaureate granted 1871. It is composed of 16 schools and colleges. . ``We normally don't get a chance to see all the competition from the surrounding areas, so it's a good experience every year.''

In the combined competition - boys' and girls' scores added together - Crescenta Valley beat Hart 425-1/2-350.
