Bamboo bamboo, plant of the family Gramineae (grass family), chiefly of warm or tropical regions, where it is sometimes an extremely important component of the vegetation. It is most abundant in the monsoon area of E Asia.  beginnings

"Kwalu" means 'bamboo' in Zulu, and African language. As a building material, bamboo has many incredible properties its resilient, flexible, durable and ecologically sound. It was therefore a fitting name for our company, founded in 1987 in Cape Town Cape Town or Capetown, city (1991 pop. 854,616), legislative capital of South Africa and capital of Western Cape, a port on the Atlantic Ocean. It was the capital of Cape Province before that province's subdivision in 1994. , South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. . Known in the early days for manufacturing patented polymer seating with a rustic feel, we even marked our furniture to make it resemble bamboo! The resilience of the furniture was due to a combination of the high impact resistant finish, and the steel reinforcement in all the joints. This gave the furniture its flexibility, allowing it to absorb impact and redistribute re·dis·trib·ute

The unique advantages of our early furniture were noted by the healthcare industry in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. Not surprisingly, dining and lobby furniture that was waterproof, fire-retardant and scratch resistant was highly sought after. When we added the industry's only 10-year warranty on construction and finish to the mix, we knew we were on to something.

New roots

With the majority of our orders coming from the United States, we decided to move all of our manufacturing and assembly to Ridgeland, South Carolina Ridgeland is a town in Jasper County, South Carolina, United States.
