A FOSSIL AND A FLEDGLING TO DO BATTLE IN BIG 'CAP.

Byline: KEVIN MODESTI Horse Racing horse racing, trials of speed involving two or more horses. It includes races among harnessed horses with one of two particular gaits, among saddled Thoroughbreds (or, less frequently, quarterhorses) on a flat track, or among saddled horses over a turf course with

ARCADIA - This generation gap is so wide, Laffit Pincay and Tyler Baze Tyler Baze (born October 19, 1982 in Seattle, Washington) is an American Champion jockey. Born into a racing family, both of his parents were jockeys as is his uncle, Gary Baze. His second cousin is U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey, Russell Baze.  can ride two horses through it.

Pincay, 54 years old, will ride Lethal Instrument in the 64th Santa Anita Handicap The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the late winter at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses three years old and up, and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during  on Saturday; Baze, 18, will ride Moonlight Charger.

Do the math. That's a 36-year difference between jockeys in a $1 million race - almost certainly a record age spread, if anybody kept track of such things.

Consider that by the time Baze was born on Oct. 19, 1982, Pincay already had been a Hall of Famer for seven years, recorded 5,000 of his 9,087 victories, won four Eclipse Awards, led the nation's jockeys in earnings six times - and had won the Santa Anita Handicap four times.

It says something about the single-mindedness of jockeys that neither seems to have given the oddity much thought. Of course, they ride against each other almost every day, just not in events of the Big 'Cap's magnitude.

``I don't even think about it, (that) he's a young kid and I'm an old guy,'' said Pincay, who leads the Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:

  • Santa Anita, Mexico holy site in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
jockey standings despite being the oldest rider competing at a major American track.

Pincay doesn't often display the satisfaction he must feel in beating the young hotshots. But he does remember beating Victor Espinoza Victor Espinoza (born May 23, 1972 in Mexico City, Mexico) is a jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. He began riding in his native Mexico and earned his first win there in 1992 before moving the following year to compete at racetracks in California.  in a stretch duel last season, looking over at the man 26 years his junior as they galloped out and saying, ``I'm not too old, huh?''

Nor does Pincay volunteer advice to the riders following in his hoofprints.

``Only when they ask me,'' he said, sitting in a rocking chair in front of a TV set in the Santa Anita jockeys' room this week. ``They ask me questions about what I eat, how I stay in shape.''

Pincay said he looks at a youngster like Baze and thinks about how much he'll learn in the years ahead.

``A rider is going to go through so many stages in his career,'' he said. ``He's got to learn how to be a winner. He's also got to learn how to handle losing.''

Pincay is impressed with Baze.

``He's improving all the time,'' he said. ``He really loves the game, he's here every morning (exercising horses), he's concentrating. He's got a great future.''

of leading Bay Area rider Russell Baze, was given the Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding apprentice in 2000. His victories Thursday aboard Maura's Diamond ($13) and Desert Surge ($18.80) put him fifth in the Santa Anita standings with 29 wins, 15 behind Pincay but ahead of Hall of Famers Gary Stevens, Chris McCarron and Eddie Delahoussaye.

Baze's victory aboard Persianlux at 27-1 odds in the Grade II San Luis Obispo Handicap The San Luis Obispo Handicap is a race for Thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. The race is open to horses age four and up, willing to race one and one-half miles on the turf. Saturday's Big 'Cap will mark Baze's first start in a million-dollar race.

Does he think about being the kid in the room?

``No. No need to,'' Baze said between races. ``Of course, all the older guys are better than me. But sometimes I outride out·ride

them. Sometimes they have a better horse and sometimes I do.''

Baze said he gets riding advice from some of his opponents. Not Pincay, though.

``He's really quiet, really to himself,'' Baze said. ``I like to mess around with the other guys. He's always sitting there, watching the TV and reading the (Daily Racing) Form.''

Reading the Form suggests neither jockey is likely to win the 13-horse Big 'Cap.

Pincay's mount, 5-year-old Lethal Instrument, is 15-1 on the morning line after running a strong-finishing second to Guided Tour in the San Antonio Handicap The San Antonio Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. The race is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. The Grade II event offers a purse of $250,000.

Moonlight Charger, is 30-1 (paired with Nurdlinger in the mutuel field) after running an even third at 66-1 in the same race for John Sullivan.

But at their ages, it's something for Pincay and Baze just to compete in this kind of race. To compete against one another, that's something else.

--'Cap overflows: The 13 horses entered Thursday would be the most to run in the Big 'Cap since Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

It's possible some were entered just in case 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow doesn't start, and will be scratched if he does.

Tiznow, who drew post 5 and is the 8-5 favorite on Jeff Tufts' morning line, put in his third strong gallop Thursday since having the patch on his cracked right front hoof hoof, horny epidermal casing at the end of the digits of an ungulate (hoofed) mammal. Co-owner Michael Cooper said his worry now is whether the rain will return and ruin the track.

Guided Tour, the San Antonio Handicap winner who could have returned to the Fair Grounds for Sunday's $500,000 New Orleans Handicap The New Orleans Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana. Open to horses four years old and up, the race is run at a distance of one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. It currently offers a purse of $500,000. , was entered, but Donn Handicap winner Captain Steve was not.

``One million dollars is why we're staying,'' said Guided Tour trainer Niall O'Callaghan.

--Derby trail: Palmeiro, second to Millennium Wind at 31-1 odds in the Santa Catalina Stakes, drew the rail post position for Saturday's $200,000 San Rafael. His nine opponents include recent stakes winners Early Flyer, who stretches out to 1 mile, and Wild and Wise, going for his first victory in open company.

Millennium Wind is going to the March 11 Louisiana Derby instead of the March 17 San Felipe against early Kentucky Derby favorite Point Given. Chris McCarron will stick with Millennium Wind, and Pat Day takes over Dollar Bill for the Louisiana race.
