A FIRST PERSON ACCOUNT OF RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS.

SCULPTOR Andy Schuessler needed steady work after grad school but didn't want to stray too far from his chosen field. So he got into the business end of the art world, working for companies that transport and install fine art pieces. Seven years later Schuessler and his wife started their own company, Crate 88 Fine Art Handling, out of a warehouse space near Lincoln and Washington boulevards in Marina del Rey Del Rey may refer to:

spoke with Schuessler about using his experience and contacts to pinpoint a niche within a niche.

"We're a service industry for museums, collectors and galleries. We provide local pickup and delivery of art pieces, as well as installation and packing and crating for shipping and traveling shows. Our warehouse has a wood shop for crate-building, a wrapping section, and we also provide a limited amount of long-term storage.

"We charge an hourly rate for trucking and installation, usually about $70 an hour for two men. Crating prices differ because everything is custom-built. It depends on the size and whether it's a one-way shipping crate, a permanent crate, or a traveling crate.

"I started because many of the clients I had worked with were pressuring me to start my own company. I saw that the large companies weren't providing good service, and I got tired of being fired for opening my mouth and saying how I thought things should be done.

"We decided we wanted to be small. It's just not worth it to us to be running a sweatshop sweatshop: see sweating system. , which is what the big companies become. We handle the finesse jobs. We wouldn't do something as large as the Van Gogh exhibit at LACMA LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art
LACMA Los Angeles County Medical Association
LACMA Latin American and Caribbean Movers Association
. If you want the big gorilla work, go to another company.

"Our clientele have used the big guys and weren't satisfied with the level of service. We do a lot of corporate work with art collections of companies like Bank of America
