He is a switch hitter and throws right-handed.  took the job from him. But Morales was sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake after Monday's game.

``The more you can get in there and produce and help the team out, it's a good feeling to have,'' Quinlan said. ``It's not only good for yourself but you know your team has a chance to win some games. I was happy with my role before, and any extra playing time is even better for me.''

After playing primarily against left-handed pitchers earlier in the season, Quinlan started to receive more playing time against right-handers. He has at-bats in just eight games this month but has delivered multiple RBIs in five of those games, including the last two. He is batting .440 in July with 11 RBIs.

``Q always stays ready,'' Scioscia said. ``He has most of his at-bats against left-handers but he keeps working every day. He's got some big hits for us and had one for us tonight. He just keeps getting those big hits.''

While his two-run single was the difference in Sunday's 3-1 victory over Kansas City Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo. (inc. 1850). , his two-run single in the seventh inning Monday merely provided insurance.

The Angels pounded the Devil Rays to take a 5-0 lead by the end of the third inning, and John Lackey (9-6) easily made it stand up. Lackey gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits in eight innings.

The right-hander is back to his winning ways after his defeat last week snapped a four-start win streak. In Lackey's last five victories, all since June 26, he has given up a combined five earned runs. He has 44 strikeouts in his last five starts, an average of just under nine a game.

in last place in the AL East, Lackey was on his toes. He was well aware Tampa Bay had scored a combined 27 runs in victories Friday and Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles.

``I watched that 13-12 game a little bit the other day, so I knew they were swinging the bat pretty good,'' he said. ``They were definitely aggressive and I was able to locate early in the count and get some early-count outs.''

Before the Devil Rays could break through with their first two runs off Lackey, Juan Rivera pushed the lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning on a towering home run to left field off former Dodger Jae Seo (0-5).

``That was properly hit,'' Scioscia deadpanned.

Rivera now has nine home runs in his last 17 games and is two shy of Don Baylor's club record of 11 home runs in the month of July.

``He got on a great roll last year for us,'' Scioscia said. ``It might have been around August or so when he really started swinging the bat. Obviously, he's swung the bat well all the way through for us. He's given us a big lift, to say the least.''

Despite being used in the last two games, Scot Shields was called on to pitch the ninth.

``I think (today) it puts us in a position where we'll try to stay away from him, but (Monday) he was fine,'' Scioscia said. ``We'll see how Shields gets through his pregame but we're very comfortable with Hector (Carrasco) and J.C. (Romero) and Brendan (Donnelly) being able to get us to (closer) Frankie (Rodriguez) if need be.''
