A Developing Tropical System Will Head Toward the U.S. This Weekend. The Weather Channel Expert Available at Hurricane Central for Media Interviews/Commentary/Analysis The Weather Channel:
WHAT: According to The Weather Channel -- the "Hurricane
Authority" -- reports indicate that a low pressure system in the
Atlantic between the southeast U.S. coast and Bermuda could develop
into a tropical depression or storm as early as late today. If the
system becomes a tropical storm, it will receive the name "Gabrielle."
An Air Force Hurricane Hunter plane is scheduled to investigate this
system this afternoon.
Current forecasts indicate that the system will approach the Carolina
Coast and then turn north and northeast. This will cause waves to
increase, heightening the threat of dangerous rip currents from the
Atlantic beaches of Florida to the Delmarva peninsula. Other impacts
will depend on how much the low pressure intensifies and its exact
track, but the potential exists for gusty winds and locally heavy rain
Saturday night and Sunday, especially in eastern North Carolina. The
system's remnants could affect the Mid-Atlantic on Monday.
