His realistic, detailed paintings of wild birds will go on display this weekend at the Cedar Centre Art Gallery.

``I love bird-watching. It's relaxing,'' said Smith, 44, who started drawing and painting as a boy.

The show will open with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the gallery, 44857 Cedar Ave., and run through July 8. Gallery hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Wanting to become a doctor in his boyhood, Smith later merged his interests in art and biology after he came across an article on Roger Tory Peterson Roger Tory Peterson (August 28, 1908 – July 28, 1996), was an American naturalist, ornithologist, artist, and educator, and held to be one of the founding inspirations for the 20th century environmental movement.

Smith realized that he could combine both his loves, art and science, and perhaps make a career of doing so. He spent the next five years studying biology and ornithology ornithology

Collecting and preparing specimens, he worked in the Vertebrate Zoology zoology, branch of biology concerned with the study of animal life. From earliest times animals have been vitally important to man; cave art demonstrates the practical and mystical significance animals held for prehistoric man.  Museum at the Long Beach campus, while he developed his artistic skills.

Eventually, Smith started his own graphics business, Smith Design Studio, where he develops fine art, illustrations and graphics designs. He also teaches computer graphics at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. .

Smith has been a court bailiff for 15 years, including the last two for Superior Court Judge Steven Ogden in Lancaster.

Smith, a Lancaster resident, also serves as an assistant Scoutmaster for his son's Boy Scout troop and writes articles on Internet design and marketing. In February he was appointed to the Lancaster Planning Commission by Councilwoman Michelle Idleman.

``I've been involved in politics and the community for quite a while. It was just like the next step to be involved. If you make the community better for everyone, you make life better for yourself,'' said Smith.

Smith believes that places like the Cedar Center contribute to the community by bringing together people from all walks of life.

``It builds a better sense of community,'' he said.
