Background  South Wales Echo The South Wales Echo is a daily newspaper distributed in south Wales. It was founded in 1884 and is based in Thomson House, Cardiff city centre. It is published daily, in a tabloid form, by Media Wales Ltd (formerly Western Mail & Echo Ltd), part of the Trinity Mirror group.  

Doris was a dedicated teacher who endeavoured to give her service to others and help worthy causes. Born in 1914 to David, a farmer, and Sarah Jane Sarah Jane can refer to:

, a housewife, Doris was the first of three girls, later joined by sisters Stella and Beryl.

She was educated at Bryncethin School and Bridgend County Girls' School before training to become a teacher at Swansea College Swansea College is a further education college in Swansea. It is one of the largest further education colleges in Wales with over 15,000 students and employing approximately 1,000 staff. .

She spent several years teaching in Stafford and later at Hendreforgan School in Rhondda but in 1943 decided to go to Calcutta to work as a missionary.

She returned to Britain 14 years later to teach in the Midlands before training as a minister at the Brecon Memorial College.

Doris went on to become a minister with the English Congregational Church in Ogmore Vale where she remained until her retirement in the mid-1970s.

However, she continued to play an active part in church affairs, campaigning passionately for justice and peace and carrying out voluntary work.

She was particularly fond of helping young people and was responsible for setting up the first Pilot's movement, a church-based social group for young people.

Doris enjoyed walking in the countryside and loved nature and animals but she had a particular love for cats.

Her niece Felicity Watkins said: 'Doris was a person of character and determination who truly lived her faith and gave her life in service to others. She left her mark on countless lives.'

Doris lived at Maendy Farm - where she was born - with her sister Stella and brother-in-law, Arthur, until she died on Sunday, August 8.
