A DECIDEDLY DISASTROUS DAY AT DEL MAR.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

The Del Mar racetrack Del Mar Racetrack is an American thoroughbred horse racing track at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in the seaside city of Del Mar, California, 20 miles north of San Diego. Operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, it is known for the slogan, "Where The Turf Meets The Surf.  and Thoroughbred Owners of California added $100,000 to the purse for Saturday's San Diego Handicap The San Diego Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. The race is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. The race carries a purse of 300,000.  to make sure that drawing card Silver Charm would run. Here's what they bought.

656 in on-site attendance over the same day last year.

A last-place finish by Silver Charm, apparently a victim of respiratory bleeding, a disappointment to the bettors who made him 1-5 and especially the bridge-jumpers who dropped more than $100,000 in show bets.

Big worries about the marquee value of the Pacific Classic, in which Silver Charm, the 1997 Kentucky Derby winner, was to be the star attraction.

Unrelated to the San Diego, the day also saw Laffit Pincay, the greatest active jockey, fracture his left collarbone col·lar·bone

and a rib in a 10th-race fall. Pincay is one winner from Bill Shoemaker's Del Mar record for career winners and 202 from Shoemaker's world record.

All in all, a great day to be a Del Mar executive.

The Mark McGwire show had left town, and now it was Silver Charm's turn to take batting practice, tuning up to face Gentlemen in the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 15. Not only didn't he knock his four opponents into the upper deck, he barely made contact.

He was well-positioned on the outside of leader Mud Route halfway through the 1 1/16-mile race. But when Hal's Pal applied pressure from the outside, and Gary Stevens asked Silver Charm to quicken to maintain position, the 4-year-old didn't respond.

Silver Charm dropped back steadily and jogged home last, no longer urged by Stevens, 27 lengths behind victorious Mud Route. Of the purse, raised to $250,000, Silver Charm collected $5,010.

It was the first time in 15 starts he'd finished worse than second.

Stevens was reassuring. ``It's definitely not an injury,'' the jockey said. ``Not that I felt. All the symptoms would tell me he bled pretty significantly.''

Saturday night, an endoscopic examination of Silver Charm's lungs revealed ``very minor'' bleeding, trainer Bob Baffert announced. But Baffert seemed to think there was something else wrong internally.

``There's something wrong with his motor,'' Baffert said. ``We're going to check him from stem to stern.''

The diagnosis, and how quickly Silver Charm returns to training, will determine whether he runs in the Pacific Classic. He missed the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the late winter at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It was run as a handicap race until 1997 when it was switched to weight-for-age conditions.  after minor physical problems were announced within days of the races.

There were boos from the crowd of 19,231, but not many, a tribute to his popularity.

``You hate to see a special horse, especially one you're part of, give the public a bad performance,'' Stevens said. ``There were some boos out there. The horse doesn't deserve that.''
