A DAY OF DREAMS FOR MANY LIST OF OSCAR NOMINEES BY TURNS PREDICTABLE, UNEXPECTED, RECORD-BREAKING.

Byline: Greg Hernandez Staff Writer

`Dreamgirls'' earned more Academy Award nominations -- eight -- than any other film Tuesday morning but was stunningly left out of the best picture race despite widely being considered a front-runner.

Instead, the competition for Oscar's biggest prize is between Golden Globe Award winner ``Babel Babel (bā`bəl) [Heb.,=confused], in the Bible, place where Noah's descendants (who spoke one language) tried to build a tower reaching up to heaven to make a name for themselves. ,'' ``Letters From Iwo Jima Letters from Iwo Jima (Japanese: 硫黄島からの手紙, Iwo jima kara no tegami) is a 2006 Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning critically-acclaimed[1][2][3] ,'' surprise Producers Guild of America winner ``Little Miss Sunshine,'' ``The Departed'' and ``The Queen.''

The absence of ``Dreamgirls'' left the Oscar race more wide open than usual, with no clear-cut front-runner. By any standard, however, it is an unusual year. While the ethnic diversity that marked the nominations is being celebrated, many categories did not follow form.

For instance, none of the best picture nominees had anyone in the best actor category. Nor did any of them receive a cinematography cinematography: see motion picture photography.

nomination, almost always a hallmark of a best picture. Only two (``Babel,'' ``The Departed'') were nominated in the best editing category. And the snubbed ``Dreamgirls'' got the most nominations with eight.

``Babel'' nabbed seven nominations overall, including a nod for director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu. He competes against two-time best director Oscar winner Clint Eastwood, nominated for ``Iwo Jima Iwo Jima (ē`wō jē`mə, ē`wô), Jap. Rounding out the directing category are Stephen Frears for ``The Queen'' and Paul Greengrass for ``United 93.''

Surprisingly left off the list were ``Dreamgirls'' director Bill Condon Bill Condon (born William Condon on October 22, 1955) is an Academy Award winning American screenwriter and director. Biography

, however, is rarely overlooked on any acting list. The two-time Oscar winner made history with her best actress nomination for ``The Devil Wears Prada'' -- her 14th overall -- breaking her own record for the most nominations of any performer in history.

``It's extraordinary that anyone in the actor's branch is even speaking to me, never mind nominating me yet again,'' the good-humored Streep said in a statement. ``I'm very, very grateful.''

Front-runner Helen Mirren received an expected best actress nomination for ``The Queen'' and will compete against Streep, first-time nominee Penelope Cruz (``Volver''), five-time nominee Kate Winslet <noinclude></noinclude>

Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born October 5, 1975) is a five-time Academy Award-nominated, Emmy Award-nominated, BAFTA, Grammy and Screen Actors Guild Award-winning English actress.

Dench, who earned her sixth Oscar nod, said: ``I'm in frighteningly good company. It is very nice of the queen to allow me in for a minute. It was one of the harder parts I have played. At the end of the day I was quite glad to get back to the person I am.''

Another Oscar perennial, Peter O'Toole Noun 1. Peter O'Toole - British actor (born in Ireland in 1932)

Overall, the acting categories were more ethnically diverse than usual, with two of O'Toole's competitors -- Forest Whitaker for ``The Last King of Scotland'' and Will Smith for ``The Pursuit of Happyness'' -- African-Americans. Rounding out the best actor category are first-time nominee Ryan Gosling Ryan Thomas Gosling (born November 12 1980) is an Academy Award-nominated Canadian actor. Also in the category are Cate Blanchett for ``Notes on a Scandal'' and child actress Abigail Breslin for ``Little Miss Sunshine.''
